Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Agricultural Engineer to join our consulting team in Carnarvon, Northern Cape. This pivotal role involves providing expert advice and engineering solutions to our diverse portfolio of clients, primarily focused on optimizing agricultural systems, improving water management, enhancing soil health, and integrating sustainable farming technologies. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of both theoretical engineering principles and practical agricultural operations, capable of translating complex data into actionable strategies for our farmers. You will be instrumental in driving efficiency, productivity, and environmental stewardship across various agricultural enterprises, from extensive livestock farming to intensive crop production. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive on-site assessments of farms to identify engineering challenges and opportunities for improvement.
- Develop and implement innovative engineering designs for irrigation systems, water harvesting, soil conservation structures, farm infrastructure, and waste management.
- Utilize advanced agricultural technology, including GIS, remote sensing, and precision farming tools, to provide data-driven recommendations.
- Provide expert consultation and technical support to farmers on best practices in crop management, animal husbandry, and resource optimization.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, feasibility studies, and project proposals for clients and internal stakeholders.
- Manage agricultural engineering projects from conception through to completion, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
- Stay abreast of the latest advancements in agricultural engineering, technology, and environmental regulations to continuously enhance service offerings.
- Facilitate workshops and training sessions for farmers and junior staff on new technologies and sustainable agricultural techniques.
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams including agronomists, hydrologists, and environmental specialists to deliver integrated solutions.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Engineering or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in agricultural engineering or consulting.
- Proven experience in designing and managing irrigation and water management systems.
- Proficiency in GIS software, CAD, and other relevant engineering design tools.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex data.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly to non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated project management capabilities, including planning, execution, and monitoring.
- Valid South African driver's license and willingness to travel extensively within the Northern Cape region.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) with ECSA or eligibility for immediate registration.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Agricultural Engineering, Hydrology, or a related discipline.
- Experience with precision agriculture technologies and remote sensing applications.
- Knowledge of local farming practices and challenges specific to the Northern Cape environment.
- Fluency in Afrikaans, in addition to English, would be highly advantageous for client interaction.
- Previous experience working with a large agricultural cooperative or consulting firm.
