Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and analytical Agricultural Economist to join our dynamic team in Maputo, Mozambique. This pivotal role will be instrumental in providing critical economic insights and strategic recommendations to enhance our agricultural operations, supply chain efficiency, and market positioning within Mozambique and the broader regional context. The Agricultural Economist will be responsible for conducting in-depth market research, analyzing agricultural policies, evaluating economic trends, and forecasting commodity prices to inform business decisions. You will work closely with various departments, including sourcing, processing, and sales, to identify opportunities for growth, optimize resource allocation, and mitigate risks. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive market analysis for various agricultural commodities in Mozambique and regional markets.
  • Analyze agricultural policies, trade agreements, and regulatory frameworks to assess their impact on business operations.
  • Develop and implement economic models for forecasting commodity prices, supply-demand dynamics, and market trends.
  • Evaluate the economic viability and impact of new agricultural projects, investments, and initiatives.
  • Provide expert economic advice and strategic recommendations to senior management on market entry, expansion, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Prepare detailed reports, presentations, and briefings on economic findings and market outlooks.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (sourcing, logistics, processing, sales) to optimize operational efficiency and supply chain performance.
  • Monitor global and regional macroeconomic indicators and their implications for the agricultural sector in Mozambique.
  • Contribute to the development of sustainable agricultural practices and farmer livelihood programs.
  • Represent Olam Agri in discussions with government bodies, industry associations, and other stakeholders.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Agricultural Economics, Economics, Agribusiness, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional experience in agricultural economics, market research, or economic analysis, preferably within the agribusiness sector.
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills, including proficiency in econometrics and statistical modeling.
  • Expertise in data analysis tools and software (e.g., R, Python, Stata, SAS, SPSS, Excel).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to translate complex economic data into clear, actionable business insights.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics or a closely related discipline.
  • Prior experience working in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Mozambique.
  • Proficiency in Portuguese (written and spoken) is highly advantageous.
  • Experience with GIS software for spatial data analysis.
  • Familiarity with international agricultural trade policies and regulations.
