Hoërskool Upington is seeking an enthusiastic and compassionate Afterschool Program Tutor Assistant to join our dedicated team. In this pivotal part-time role, you will be instrumental in supporting students across various grades in their academic journey after regular school hours. Working under the guidance of lead tutors and teachers, you will provide essential academic assistance, foster a positive and productive learning environment, and help students complete homework, grasp challenging concepts, and develop effective study habits. Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring to students requiring assistance in various subjects (e.g., Mathematics, English, Sciences) for primary and secondary levels.
- Assist students with homework completion, assignment organization, and preparation for tests and examinations.
- Work collaboratively with lead tutors and teachers to implement daily lesson plans and engage students in educational activities.
- Supervise students during program hours, ensuring a safe, respectful, and engaging learning environment in accordance with school policies.
- Monitor student progress, identify areas for improvement, and communicate observations and any concerns to lead tutors and relevant staff.
- Encourage student participation, critical thinking, and a positive attitude towards learning and academic challenges.
- Assist with setting up and packing away learning materials, equipment, and maintaining a tidy and organized workspace.
- Uphold school policies and procedures, ensuring the well-being and safety of all students at all times.
- Foster a positive and inclusive atmosphere where every student feels valued and supported in their educational journey.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated academic proficiency in subjects relevant to school-aged children (primary/secondary levels).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly when interacting with children, adolescents, and colleagues.
- Patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to help students learn and succeed academically and personally.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities, capable of handling multiple tasks efficiently.
- Ability to manage small groups effectively and maintain order and focus in a learning setting.
- Fluency in both English and Afrikaans (written and spoken) is highly advantageous, given the school's context.
- A positive attitude, adaptability, and a proactive approach to problem-solving and support.
- Reliability and punctuality, essential for consistent student support.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience (e.g., 6+ months) in tutoring, mentoring, childcare, or a similar educational support role.
- Currently enrolled in or possessing a certificate/diploma/degree in Education, Child Development, Social Work, or a related field.
- Knowledge of the South African National Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) across different grades.
- First Aid and CPR certification is a plus.
- Experience working in a school, community program, or youth development setting.
- Proficiency in additional local languages.
