Job Description

The Chinatown Service Center (CSC) is seeking a passionate and dedicated Adult Literacy Instructor to join our vibrant team in the heart of Los Angeles’ historic Chinatown. For over 50 years, CSC has been a cornerstone of the community, providing essential services and programs that empower individuals and families to thrive. Our unwavering mission is to provide outstanding services and advocacy to the underserved and low-income immigrant communities in Los Angeles County, fostering self-sufficiency, promoting cultural understanding, and enabling access to critical resources. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement engaging, learner-centered lesson plans and curricula for adult literacy and basic education classes.
  • Deliver high-quality instruction in reading, writing, numeracy, and critical thinking skills to diverse adult learners in individual and small group settings.
  • Assess student needs, progress, and learning styles, adapting teaching methods and materials accordingly.
  • Create a supportive, inclusive, and encouraging classroom environment that fosters student engagement and success.
  • Monitor and document student attendance, performance, and outcomes, providing regular reports as required.
  • Collaborate with program coordinators and other staff to ensure program effectiveness and alignment with CSC's mission.
  • Provide individualized support and mentorship to students, addressing their unique challenges and celebrating their achievements.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of adult literacy best practices, resources, and instructional technologies.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and community outreach events.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in adult education or teaching literacy/ESL to adults.
  • Excellent pedagogical and classroom management skills.
  • Strong understanding of adult learning principles and diverse learning styles.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Proficiency in developing and adapting educational materials.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations, including immigrants and refugees.
  • Patience, empathy, and a strong commitment to empowering adult learners.
  • Basic computer proficiency for record-keeping and resource utilization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Linguistics, TESOL, or a related field.
  • Experience working within a non-profit or community-based organization.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and a relevant community language such as Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, or Spanish.
  • Familiarity with various adult literacy assessment tools and curriculum frameworks.
  • Certification in Adult Education or TESOL.
