Job Description

Career.supersecrets is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Academic Librarian to join our dedicated team in Chester, Cheshire. This pivotal role involves contributing to the development and delivery of high-quality library services that support our organisational objectives, research initiatives, and educational programmes. As an Academic Librarian, you will be instrumental in ensuring access to relevant and current information resources, fostering information literacy, and supporting scholarly communication. You will work within a collaborative environment, engaging with diverse stakeholders to enhance the user experience and promote effective utilisation of our extensive collection, both physical and digital.

Your responsibilities will span across collection management, reference and research support, and the delivery of engaging information literacy sessions. You will play a key role in curating specialised subject guides, assisting users with complex research queries, and actively participating in projects aimed at improving our library services. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and develop physical and digital collections, including selection, acquisition, and deselection of resources relevant to our subject areas.
  • Provide expert reference and research support to staff and users, assisting with complex information retrieval and literature searches.
  • Design and deliver engaging information literacy instruction and workshops, promoting critical thinking and effective research skills.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of subject guides, online tutorials, and other learning resources.
  • Stay current with emerging trends and technologies in library science, information management, and scholarly communication.
  • Participate in library outreach activities and promotional events to enhance awareness and engagement with library services.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to integrate library resources and services into research and educational programmes.
  • Undertake cataloguing, classification, and metadata management activities in accordance with professional standards.
  • Assist with the implementation and optimisation of library systems and digital platforms.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science (or equivalent recognised qualification).
  • Proven experience as an Academic Librarian or in a similar professional library role.
  • Strong understanding of current trends and best practices in academic librarianship and information management.
  • Proficiency in using library management systems, discovery layers, and various digital platforms.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver effective information literacy instruction.
  • Experience with collection development and resource management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with institutional repositories or research data management.
  • Familiarity with specific subject areas relevant to our organisation's focus.
  • Proficiency in creating online learning objects or multimedia content.
  • Experience with web content management systems.
  • Membership in a relevant professional library association (e.g., CILIP).
