Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic engineering team in Maputo, Mozambique. This pivotal role involves contributing to the design, development, installation, and maintenance of mechanical systems and components critical to our extensive mining and logistics operations. As a Mechanical Engineer at Vale Moçambique, you will be instrumental in optimizing machinery performance, enhancing operational reliability, and implementing innovative engineering solutions across various projects. Your responsibilities will span from conducting thorough inspections and troubleshooting complex mechanical issues to developing preventative maintenance strategies that minimize downtime and extend equipment lifespan. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including operations, electrical, and civil engineering departments, to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems within larger infrastructure projects. This position offers a unique opportunity to apply advanced engineering principles in a challenging industrial environment, contributing directly to the efficiency, safety, and productivity of one of the largest mining ventures in Africa. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, analyze, and develop mechanical systems and components for mining equipment, processing plants, and associated infrastructure.
  • Conduct detailed inspections, diagnostics, and troubleshooting of mechanical failures, implementing effective corrective actions.
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs to optimize equipment reliability and reduce downtime.
  • Manage and oversee the installation, commissioning, and testing of new mechanical equipment and upgrades.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary engineering teams (electrical, civil, process) to ensure integrated project delivery.
  • Prepare technical specifications, reports, and documentation for mechanical projects and maintenance activities.
  • Ensure all mechanical designs and operations comply with local and international safety standards and environmental regulations.
  • Perform root cause analysis for recurring mechanical issues and propose long-term solutions.
  • Participate in project planning, budgeting, and scheduling for mechanical engineering initiatives.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technical staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of progressive experience in mechanical engineering, preferably in heavy industry, mining, or manufacturing.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor).
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and material science.
  • Experience with preventative and predictive maintenance strategies.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, fluent in English (Portuguese is a plus).
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, fast-paced industrial environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification.
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software.
  • Knowledge of CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) software.
  • Familiarity with Mozambican industrial regulations and standards.
  • Project management experience in an industrial setting.
