Job Description
We are seeking a talented and passionate Backend Developer with expertise in Node.js to join our dynamic engineering team in Berlin. At Zalando, you’ll be instrumental in shaping the future of our e-commerce platform, contributing to high-impact projects that reach millions of customers daily. This role involves designing, developing, and maintaining scalable and resilient microservices that power various aspects of our customer experience, from product discovery and checkout to logistics and payment processing. You will work within a cross-functional team, collaborating closely with product managers, frontend developers, and other backend engineers to deliver innovative solutions. Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain high-performance, scalable, and secure backend services primarily using Node.js.
- Collaborate with product owners, frontend developers, and other stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
- Contribute to architectural discussions and help shape the future direction of our microservices landscape.
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code, adhering to best practices and coding standards.
- Participate in code reviews, providing constructive feedback to peers and continuously improving code quality.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize existing services to ensure stability, performance, and reliability.
- Implement and manage API integrations with internal and external systems.
- Champion continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) practices and contribute to automation efforts.
Required Skills
- 3+ years of professional experience as a Backend Developer, with strong proficiency in Node.js and its ecosystem (e.g., Express.js, NestJS).
- Solid understanding of RESTful API design principles and experience in building scalable APIs.
- Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cassandra).
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Proficiency in writing unit, integration, and end-to-end tests.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Experience with event-driven architectures and message queues (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ).
- Familiarity with GraphQL.
- Understanding of software security principles and practices.
- Contribution to open-source projects or active participation in developer communities.
