Job Description
We are seeking a highly experienced and dedicated Health & Safety Officer to oversee and enhance safety protocols within a dynamic industrial estate in Kukwuaba, Abuja. This pivotal role requires a professional with a comprehensive understanding of health and safety best practices, regulatory compliance, and risk management specific to industrial operations. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring robust safety programs, ensuring strict adherence to national and international safety regulations, and fostering a proactive safety culture across multiple entities within the estate. You will be responsible for conducting thorough risk assessments, managing incident investigations, and providing critical training to employees across various industrial processes. Acting as the primary point of contact for all Health & Safety matters, you will collaborate closely with management, staff, and external regulatory bodies to mitigate hazards and promote a secure working environment. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and rigorously monitor Health and Safety policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with national (e.g., Factories Act) and international standards (e.g., OSHA, ISO 45001).
- Conduct regular, detailed site inspections and audits across the entire industrial estate to proactively identify potential hazards and ensure unwavering compliance with all safety regulations.
- Perform comprehensive risk assessments and meticulous job safety analyses for diverse industrial operations, machinery, and equipment.
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, near-misses, and occupational health issues, determining root causes and recommending effective corrective and preventive actions.
- Design and deliver engaging and effective Health & Safety training programs for all employees, contractors, and visitors, promoting safety awareness and best practices.
- Ensure the proper maintenance, inspection, and calibration of all safety equipment, personal protective equipment (PPE), fire suppression systems, and emergency response tools.
- Prepare and maintain detailed H&S reports, records, and documentation for both internal review and external regulatory compliance purposes.
- Liaise effectively with regulatory bodies, emergency services, and external consultants on all Health & Safety-related matters.
- Champion and promote a strong safety culture through regular awareness campaigns, organized safety meetings, and consistent communication initiatives.
- Manage and coordinate emergency response plans and drills, including evacuation procedures, first aid provision, and crisis management protocols.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 4 years) in Health and Safety management, specifically within an industrial, manufacturing, or similar heavy-industry environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Nigerian H&S legislation, environmental regulations, and international safety standards (e.g., OSHA, NEBOSH principles).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for effective risk assessment, hazard identification, and incident investigation.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency in H&S management software and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Demonstrated ability to develop, customize, and deliver impactful training programs.
- Exceptional organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the capacity to manage multiple priorities effectively.
Preferred Qualifications
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or an equivalent recognized professional H&S qualification.
- Membership in a relevant professional body (e.g., Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON), IOSH).
- Experience with ISO 45001 implementation, maintenance, and auditing.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Project management skills related to the initiation and execution of H&S improvement initiatives.
- Bachelor's degree or HND in Environmental Safety, Industrial Safety, Engineering, or a related field.
