Career.supersecrets is seeking a dedicated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to join our client’s team within a bustling industrial estate in Jabi, Abuja. This pivotal role involves safeguarding the well-being of all personnel, protecting company assets, and ensuring strict adherence to local and international health and safety regulations. As a Health & Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring robust safety programs tailored to the unique challenges of an industrial environment. You will lead proactive initiatives to identify potential hazards, assess risks, and implement effective control measures to prevent accidents and occupational diseases. This professional will play a critical role in fostering a strong safety culture, providing expert guidance, and conducting comprehensive training for employees at all levels. We are looking for a proactive individual with a keen eye for detail, exceptional communication skills, and a proven track record in promoting best practices in occupational health and safety within a fast-paced industrial setting. Your expertise will directly contribute to creating a secure and compliant workplace, driving continuous improvement in safety performance across the estate.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Health & Safety policies, procedures, and programs in line with national and international standards (e.g., OSHA, ILO, local regulatory bodies).
- Conduct regular risk assessments, hazard identification, and safety audits across the industrial estate to identify potential risks and recommend corrective actions.
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, near misses, and occupational diseases, determining root causes and implementing preventive measures to avoid recurrence.
- Deliver engaging and effective safety training sessions for employees, contractors, and visitors on various topics, including emergency preparedness, first aid, fire safety, and machinery operation.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation, reporting requirements, and industry best practices.
- Maintain detailed records of safety inspections, incident reports, training sessions, and regulatory compliance documentation.
- Advise management on health and safety matters, providing expert recommendations for continuous improvement and capital expenditure on safety enhancements.
- Oversee the proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety equipment.
- Coordinate with external bodies, such as regulatory agencies and emergency services, as required.
- Promote a positive and proactive safety culture throughout the industrial estate through communication campaigns, safety committees, and employee engagement initiatives.
Required Skills
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent certification.
- Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in an HSE role, specifically within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- Thorough understanding of Nigerian health and safety legislation and international standards.
- Proven ability to conduct comprehensive risk assessments and incident investigations.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with all levels of staff.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- Higher Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Safety Management, Engineering, or a related field.
- Advanced professional certifications such as NEBOSH Diploma, CSP (Certified Safety Professional), or CMIOSH.
- Experience with ISO 45001 implementation and auditing.
- Familiarity with safety management software and systems.
- Prior experience working with diverse industrial operations (e.g., logistics, manufacturing, warehousing).
