Job Description

Career.supersecrets is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Health & Safety Officer to join a prominent industrial estate client in Kubwa, Abuja. This is a crucial professional role demanding a proactive individual with a robust understanding of industrial safety protocols and regulatory compliance. As a Health & Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in fostering a culture of safety, preventing accidents, and ensuring the well-being of all personnel across the estate’s operations. Your expertise will be vital in developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive safety programs tailored to a complex industrial setting.

This position requires an individual who can not only identify potential hazards but also devise effective mitigation strategies and educate the workforce. You will be responsible for conducting thorough risk assessments, investigating incidents, and driving continuous improvement in safety performance. The ideal candidate will possess a strong command of Nigerian occupational health and safety regulations, coupled with practical experience in their application within a challenging industrial environment. Your daily activities will range from routine inspections and audits to emergency response planning and H&S committee leadership. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Health & Safety policies and procedures in line with national and international standards.
  • Conduct regular site inspections, safety audits, and risk assessments across the industrial estate to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance.
  • Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective and preventive actions.
  • Organize and deliver H&S training programs for all employees, contractors, and visitors, ensuring awareness and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all relevant Nigerian occupational health and safety legislation, including the Factories Act and OSHA guidelines.
  • Prepare and present detailed H&S reports, statistics, and performance metrics to management regularly.
  • Develop and manage emergency response plans, conducting drills and ensuring preparedness for various scenarios.
  • Maintain accurate records of H&S inspections, incidents, training, and certifications.
  • Advise management on best practices for industrial safety, environmental protection, and employee well-being.
  • Champion a proactive safety culture through communication, engagement, and leadership at all levels of the organization.
  • Liaise with external regulatory bodies during inspections and audits.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of Nigerian occupational health and safety regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Strong capabilities in conducting risk assessments, hazard identification, and incident investigation.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills for training and engagement.
  • Proficiency in H&S management systems and relevant software applications.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a diverse team.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Safety Engineering, Industrial Safety, or a related field.
  • NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent internationally recognized safety qualification.
  • Membership in a professional H&S body such as IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) or ISPON (Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria).
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • Experience with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001) is a plus.
