Job Description
Career.supersecrets is actively seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health & Safety Officer for a significant industrial estate client located in Karu, Abuja. This is a professional role demanding a robust understanding of industrial safety regulations, proactive risk management, and the ability to foster a strong safety culture across diverse operational units. As a key member of the team, you will be instrumental in ensuring strict adherence to occupational health and safety (OHS) standards, minimizing workplace hazards, and promoting a safe working environment for all employees and contractors within the industrial premises.
This challenging yet rewarding position requires a professional who is not only knowledgeable in OHS legislation but also possesses excellent communication skills to effectively train staff, conduct audits, and liaise with management and regulatory bodies. You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring health and safety programs, policies, and procedures tailored to the unique risks associated with an industrial estate, which may include manufacturing, logistics, heavy machinery, and hazardous materials. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive health and safety policies and procedures in line with national and international standards within the industrial estate.
- Conduct regular risk assessments, safety inspections, and audits across all operational areas to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions.
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, preparing detailed reports, identifying root causes, and implementing preventative measures.
- Organize and deliver health and safety training programs for employees and contractors, including induction, emergency preparedness, and specific hazard awareness.
- Ensure strict compliance with all relevant local and federal OHS legislation and industry-specific regulations.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies, external auditors, and emergency services as required.
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incident reports, training sessions, and safety data sheets (SDS).
- Advise management on health and safety best practices and new regulations to promote continuous improvement.
- Oversee the proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through awareness campaigns, safety meetings, and employee engagement initiatives.
- Prepare periodic reports on OHS performance, trends, and compliance status for management review.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Nigerian OHS legislation (e.g., Factories Act, NSITF Act, etc.) and international safety standards (e.g., OSHA, ISO 45001).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for risk assessment and incident investigation.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent certification.
- Professional membership with relevant safety bodies (e.g., ISPON, IOSH).
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Experience with environmental management systems (EMS) and sustainability practices.
- Familiarity with fire safety management and emergency response planning.
