Job Description
This role demands a highly skilled and proactive Health & Safety Officer to champion safety protocols within a bustling industrial estate in Garki, Abuja. As a critical member of the operational team, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring robust health and safety programs, ensuring strict compliance with local regulations and international best practices. Your expertise will safeguard personnel, protect assets, and foster a strong safety culture across various industrial operations. This professional position requires a meticulous individual with a strong commitment to accident prevention, risk management, and continuous improvement. You will conduct regular site inspections, lead safety training initiatives, investigate incidents, and provide expert guidance to management and staff, playing a pivotal role in maintaining a safe, healthy, and compliant working environment. The ideal candidate will be adept at identifying potential hazards, implementing corrective actions, and driving engagement in safety-related matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Health & Safety Management Systems (HSMS) tailored to an industrial estate environment.
- Conduct regular risk assessments, hazard identifications, and safety audits across all operational areas, documenting findings and recommending corrective actions.
- Ensure strict compliance with Nigerian safety legislation (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA standards) and relevant international H&S standards.
- Lead and coordinate incident investigations, including near misses and accidents, to determine root causes and implement preventative measures.
- Organize and deliver engaging safety training programs and workshops for all levels of staff, promoting a proactive safety culture.
- Prepare and submit detailed H&S reports, performance metrics, and compliance documentation to management and regulatory bodies.
- Manage emergency preparedness plans, including fire safety, first aid, and evacuation procedures, conducting drills as required.
- Oversee the inspection, maintenance, and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other safety equipment.
- Advise management on H&S matters, including new equipment installations, process changes, and facility modifications.
- Maintain accurate records of safety training, inspections, incidents, and other relevant H&S data.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of Nigerian H&S legislation and regulatory requirements.
- Proficiency in conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Valid professional H&S certifications (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
