Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Public Relations Officer to join our dynamic communications team in Berlin. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in shaping and disseminating our message, raising public awareness about humanitarian crises, and advocating for the needs of the most vulnerable populations. You will work closely with our field teams, medical experts, and advocacy specialists to translate complex humanitarian challenges into compelling narratives that resonate with the German public and media. This role requires a strategic thinker with exceptional communication skills, a deep understanding of the media landscape, and a proven ability to manage high-pressure situations. Your work will directly contribute to our ability to fundraise, recruit volunteers, and influence public discourse, ultimately enabling us to provide life-saving medical care where it’s needed most. You will be responsible for developing and executing PR strategies, fostering strong media relationships, and ensuring the accurate and impactful representation of our mission and activities across various platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement comprehensive PR strategies and campaigns aligned with organizational goals and current humanitarian priorities.
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key media contacts (print, broadcast, online) in Germany.
- Draft and distribute compelling press releases, media advisories, backgrounders, and pitch letters.
- Act as a spokesperson for the organization when required, and prepare spokespeople for media interviews.
- Monitor media coverage, analyze trends, and provide regular reports on PR effectiveness.
- Identify and proactively pursue opportunities for media placements and thought leadership.
- Manage crisis communication by developing strategies and responding effectively to sensitive issues.
- Collaborate with internal teams (fundraising, advocacy, digital) to ensure consistent messaging across all channels.
- Support the planning and execution of press conferences, media briefings, and other public events.
- Contribute to content creation for various platforms, including our website and social media channels.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 4 years) in public relations, media relations, or corporate communications, preferably within the non-profit sector.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in both German (native or near-native proficiency) and English (fluent).
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute effective PR strategies and campaigns.
- Strong existing network of media contacts in Germany, or the ability to quickly establish one.
- Experience in crisis communication and issues management.
- Proficiency in media monitoring tools and analytics.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong journalistic instincts and storytelling abilities.
- Commitment to the humanitarian principles of Ärzte ohne Grenzen.
Preferred Qualifications
- University degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Political Science, or a related field.
- Previous experience working with an international NGO or humanitarian organization.
- Familiarity with the German political and media landscape concerning international aid and development.
- Additional language skills (e.g., French, Arabic, Spanish).
- Experience with digital PR and social media strategy.
