Job Description

The Cinematographer Assistant role is a foundational and incredibly hands-on position, serving as the essential backbone for the camera department on any given set. This immediate start opportunity, based in the vibrant hub of Milton Keynes, England, is perfect for an enthusiastic and meticulous individual ready to immerse themselves in the dynamic world of film and video production. Working closely under the guidance of the Director of Photography (DoP) and the rest of the camera crew, you will become indispensable in ensuring the seamless functionality and optimal performance of all camera-related equipment, from the initial setup to the final wrap. This isn’t merely a logistical role; it’s about developing an intuitive understanding of the DoP’s vision, anticipating technical needs, and maintaining rigorous standards of care and readiness for high-value gear.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Cinematographer and camera crew with daily operations on set, including camera setup, breakdown, and repositioning.
  • Prepare and manage all camera equipment, lenses, filters, and accessories before, during, and after shoots.
  • Ensure all camera batteries are charged and media cards are prepared and formatted.
  • Perform basic camera maintenance and troubleshooting to ensure optimal performance.
  • Act as a clapper loader, maintaining accurate shot logs and camera reports.
  • Support the camera department with rigging, grip equipment, and lighting setups as needed.
  • Maintain a tidy and organised workspace around the camera, ensuring safety standards are met.
  • Transport and safeguard valuable equipment to and from locations.
  • Anticipate the needs of the Cinematographer and wider production team.

Required Skills

  • Basic understanding of camera equipment, lenses, and accessories.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Physical stamina and dexterity for handling equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience (e.g., internships, personal projects, volunteer work) on a film or video set.
  • Relevant diploma or degree in Film Production, Cinematography, Media Studies, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of various camera systems (e.g., Arri, RED, Sony, Canon).
  • First Aid certification.
  • Full UK driving license.
