Career.supersecrets is actively seeking a highly skilled and experienced Health & Safety Officer to join a leading industrial establishment located within the bustling Mararaba Industrial Estate. This is a critical professional role responsible for ensuring a safe and compliant working environment for all employees, contractors, and visitors. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring health and safety policies and procedures, in strict accordance with national and international standards. You will be expected to conduct regular risk assessments, identify potential hazards, and propose effective mitigation strategies to prevent accidents and occupational illnesses. Your daily work will involve a proactive approach to safety management, including conducting comprehensive safety audits, investigating incidents, and maintaining meticulous records of all safety-related activities. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Health & Safety policies and procedures in line with national legislation (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA) and industry best practices.
- Conduct regular risk assessments, hazard identification, and safety audits across the industrial estate to ensure compliance and mitigate potential risks.
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective and preventive actions.
- Deliver effective health and safety training programs to employees at all levels, fostering a strong safety-conscious culture.
- Ensure all safety equipment, machinery, and facilities comply with safety standards and are regularly inspected and maintained.
- Prepare and present detailed health and safety reports, including performance metrics, incident statistics, and compliance status to management.
- Act as the primary point of contact for all regulatory bodies concerning health and safety matters, ensuring adherence to all legal requirements.
- Oversee emergency preparedness planning, including fire drills, first aid readiness, and evacuation procedures.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation and industry developments, integrating new requirements into existing protocols.
- Promote ergonomic practices and maintain a healthy working environment to prevent occupational health issues.
Required Skills
- Certified in Occupational Health and Safety (e.g., NEBOSH IGC, OSHA, or equivalent).
- Minimum of 4 years of proven experience as an HSE Officer, preferably within an industrial, manufacturing, or logistics estate.
- Strong understanding of Nigerian Health and Safety laws and regulations.
- Demonstrated expertise in conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train and influence others.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and HSE management software.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Membership in a recognized professional body such as the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON) or IOSH.
- Certification in First Aid and CPR.
- Experience in environmental management systems (ISO 14001) is a plus.
