Career.supersecrets is actively recruiting on behalf of a prominent industrial estate client located in Aso Rock, Abuja, for a dedicated and experienced Health & Safety Officer. This is a critical professional role vital to ensuring a safe and compliant working environment across the entire industrial complex. As the Health & Safety Officer, you will be the cornerstone of our client’s commitment to occupational well-being, responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive health and safety programs that align with both local regulations and international best practices. Your expertise will directly contribute to minimizing risks, preventing accidents, and fostering a culture of safety among all employees, contractors, and visitors within the estate.
This position demands a proactive individual with a keen eye for detail, strong communication skills, and an unwavering dedication to safety protocols. You will be instrumental in conducting regular risk assessments, safety audits, and incident investigations, ensuring that all findings lead to effective corrective and preventive actions. Furthermore, you will play a pivotal role in educating staff through engaging training sessions, keeping them abreast of safety procedures, emergency protocols, and the proper use of personal protective equipment. The successful candidate will navigate the complexities of an active industrial environment, identifying potential hazards associated with machinery, chemicals, and operational processes, and formulating strategies to mitigate them. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Health & Safety policies, procedures, and programs for the industrial estate.
- Conduct regular risk assessments, safety audits, and inspections to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective and preventive actions.
- Organize and deliver health and safety training sessions for employees and contractors on topics such as emergency procedures, hazard communication, and PPE usage.
- Ensure strict adherence to local and national occupational health and safety regulations (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA principles).
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of safety measures, providing reports to management with actionable insights.
- Manage the proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with environmental regulations.
- Oversee emergency preparedness plans, including fire drills, evacuation procedures, and first aid provisions.
- Advise management on safety-related issues, new legislation, and best industry practices to promote a continuous improvement culture.
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training, and compliance documentation.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer, preferably in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and standards (e.g., OSHA, NEBOSH, IOSH).
- Excellent risk assessment and hazard identification abilities.
- Proficiency in conducting incident investigations and root cause analysis.
- Exceptional communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
- High level of integrity and a strong commitment to safety culture.
- Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent professional certification.
- Membership in a recognized professional safety body (e.g., ISPON, IOSH).
- Experience with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
- First Aid/CPR certification.
