Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to join a dynamic team operating within a bustling industrial estate in Suleja, Abuja. This professional role is critical to ensuring a safe, healthy, and compliant working environment for all personnel and visitors. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring robust health and safety programs, policies, and procedures that adhere to both national regulations and international best practices. You will serve as the primary point of contact for all safety-related matters, fostering a strong safety culture through continuous training, risk assessments, and proactive incident prevention. Your day-to-day will involve a comprehensive range of activities, from conducting regular site inspections and audits to investigating incidents and near-misses, identifying root causes, and recommending corrective actions. You will be responsible for maintaining meticulous records, preparing detailed reports, and ensuring all necessary safety documentation is up-to-date and accessible. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Health & Safety policies and procedures in line with national legislation and international standards.
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards, non-compliance issues, and areas for improvement.
- Perform detailed risk assessments for all operational activities, machinery, and processes, recommending and overseeing the implementation of control measures.
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, conducting root cause analyses and ensuring timely implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Organize and deliver health and safety training programs and awareness campaigns for all employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Ensure all safety equipment is properly maintained, inspected, and readily available, including PPE, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits.
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training, and all other relevant documentation.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies, internal management, and external stakeholders on all health and safety matters.
- Prepare and present regular H&S performance reports to management, highlighting key metrics, trends, and recommendations.
- Promote a strong safety culture throughout the industrial estate through communication, engagement, and leadership by example.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Nigerian Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) regulations and standards.
- Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and hazard control techniques.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in incident investigation and root cause analysis.
- Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional certification such as NEBOSH IGC, OSHA, or equivalent.
- Experience with ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management System).
- First Aid and CPR certification.
