Job Description

Career.supersecrets is seeking a highly competent and proactive Health & Safety Officer to join our client’s team within a bustling industrial estate in Guarimpa Estate, Abuja. This professional role is pivotal in ensuring a safe and compliant working environment, safeguarding employees, contractors, and visitors from potential hazards. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring occupational health and safety programs, ensuring strict adherence to both national regulations and international best practices. You will be instrumental in fostering a strong safety culture across all levels of the organization, conducting rigorous risk assessments, managing safety audits, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. This is an exciting opportunity for a seasoned H&S professional to make a significant impact in a dynamic industrial setting, contributing directly to operational excellence and employee well-being. We are looking for someone with a meticulous eye for detail, excellent communication skills, and a genuine passion for creating a hazard-free workplace. Your expertise will be critical in maintaining the highest standards of safety, preventing incidents, and ensuring that all operations run smoothly and securely.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Health & Safety policies and procedures in line with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments, hazard identifications, and safety inspections across the industrial estate to identify potential risks and recommend corrective actions.
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and ensure timely reporting of all accidents, near misses, and occupational diseases.
  • Organize and deliver H&S training programs, workshops, and induction courses for employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Ensure strict compliance with local and national H&S legislation (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA, FEPA) and internal safety guidelines.
  • Manage emergency preparedness and response plans, including fire safety, first aid, and evacuation procedures.
  • Conduct thorough safety audits, prepare detailed reports, and present findings to management, recommending actionable improvements.
  • Maintain accurate records of H&S data, incidents, training, and compliance activities.
  • Advise management on H&S best practices and new legislative requirements and changes.
  • Promote a positive safety culture through effective communication and engagement with all stakeholders at various levels.

Required Skills

  • Proven expertise in Occupational Health & Safety management within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Nigerian H&S legislation and international standards (e.g., ISO 45001).
  • Excellent risk assessment and hazard identification abilities.
  • Proficiency in incident investigation and root cause analysis techniques.
  • Ability to develop and deliver effective H&S training programs.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team with minimal supervision.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent recognized certification.
  • Membership in a recognized professional safety organization (e.g., ISPON, IOSH).
  • Experience with Environmental Management Systems (EMS).
  • First Aid and Fire Safety certification.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and their application to safety management.
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Industrial Safety, or a related field.
