This pivotal role involves developing, implementing, and monitoring robust H&S programs and policies to ensure the highest standards of safety and environmental compliance across a bustling industrial complex. The successful candidate will be instrumental in safeguarding employees, contractors, and assets. Responsibilities include conducting thorough risk assessments, investigating incidents, and providing expert H&S guidance. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement comprehensive HSE management systems compliant with local and international standards.
- Conduct regular risk assessments, safety audits, and inspections; ensure compliance with regulations and policies.
- Investigate all incidents, determine root causes, and recommend corrective/preventative actions.
- Deliver H&S training, inductions, and awareness programs for employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Advise management on H&S compliance, legislative changes, and best practices.
- Manage hazardous materials and waste disposal procedures, ensuring safe handling and disposal.
- Prepare and submit regular H&S performance reports to management.
- Ensure emergency preparedness and response plans are in place, regularly reviewed, and tested.
- Promote a strong safety culture through visible leadership and employee engagement.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer, preferably 4+ years in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
- In-depth knowledge of Nigerian H&S legislation (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA regulations) and international standards (e.g., ISO 45001, OHSAS 18001).
- Strong analytical skills for conducting risk assessments and incident investigations.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and persuade stakeholders at all levels regarding safety protocols.
Preferred Qualifications
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent professional H&S certification.
- Membership in a recognized professional safety body (e.g., IOSH, Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria – ISPON).
- Experience with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
- First Aid and Fire Safety certification.
- Experience in an industrial estate with multiple tenants or diverse operations.
