Julius Berger Nigeria Plc is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to join our dynamic team in Wuse 2, Abuja. This professional role is crucial for ensuring the highest standards of occupational health and safety across our diverse industrial estate operations and project sites. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring our robust H&S management systems, ensuring full compliance with national and international safety regulations, and fostering a proactive safety culture. You will work closely with project managers, site supervisors, and employees to identify potential hazards, conduct thorough risk assessments, and implement effective control measures to prevent accidents, injuries, and occupational illnesses. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor Health & Safety policies, programs, and procedures in line with national and international standards (e.g., OSHA, NEBOSH, ISO 45001).
- Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and risk assessments on industrial estates and project sites to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance.
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, near-misses, and occupational illnesses, determining root causes and recommending corrective and preventive actions.
- Provide comprehensive H&S training to employees, contractors, and visitors on various safety topics, including hazard communication, emergency procedures, and safe work practices.
- Ensure all H&S documentation, including permits-to-work, safety data sheets (SDS), and incident reports, are accurately maintained and readily accessible.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies, external auditors, and internal stakeholders on all H&S matters.
- Promote a strong safety culture throughout the organization through communication campaigns, safety committees, and employee engagement initiatives.
- Monitor H&S performance metrics, prepare reports, and present findings to management to drive continuous improvement.
- Oversee emergency preparedness and response plans, including drills and equipment maintenance.
- Advise management on new and existing H&S legislation, best practices, and technological advancements to ensure proactive compliance.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer, particularly in industrial, construction, or heavy industry environments.
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent recognized H&S qualification.
- In-depth knowledge of Nigerian H&S legislation and international safety standards.
- Strong proficiency in conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to develop and deliver effective H&S training programs.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Professional membership with relevant bodies (e.g., IOSH, ISPON).
- Experience with ISO 45001 implementation and auditing.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Additional specialized H&S certifications (e.g., fire safety, confined space entry, working at height).
