Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and enthusiastic Bioinformatics Engineer to join our dynamic team in Oxford. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in developing, optimising, and deploying robust bioinformatics pipelines and tools crucial for the analysis of nanopore sequencing data. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of biology, computer science, and engineering, contributing to the development of next-generation genomic technologies that have a tangible impact on global health and research. You will collaborate closely with bioinformaticians, software engineers, and research scientists to translate complex biological questions into computational solutions. Your work will directly support our R&D efforts, product development, and customer success by ensuring the accuracy, efficiency, and scalability of our data analysis capabilities. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain robust and scalable bioinformatics pipelines for the analysis of nanopore sequencing data.
  • Implement and optimise algorithms for basecalling, alignment, variant calling, methylation detection, and other genomic applications.
  • Collaborate with R&D scientists to understand biological requirements and translate them into efficient computational solutions.
  • Develop and deploy bioinformatics tools and software using best practices for code quality, documentation, and version control.
  • Perform rigorous validation and benchmarking of tools and pipelines to ensure accuracy and performance.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of existing bioinformatics infrastructure and workflows.
  • Provide technical support and expertise to internal teams and external collaborators regarding data analysis.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in bioinformatics, genomics, and sequencing technologies.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in Python and/or C++ for bioinformatics software development.
  • Strong understanding of fundamental bioinformatics algorithms and data structures.
  • Experience with next-generation sequencing data analysis (e.g., alignment, variant calling).
  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git).
  • Experience working in a Linux/Unix environment.
  • Knowledge of common bioinformatics tools and databases (e.g., samtools, bcftools, GATK).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with workflow management systems (e.g., Nextflow, Snakemake).
  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP) and containerisation technologies (e.g., Docker, Singularity).
  • Understanding of statistics and machine learning applied to biological data.
  • Experience with high-throughput data processing and parallel computing.
  • Knowledge of nanopore sequencing technology and its applications.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals related to bioinformatics or genomics.
