Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and enthusiastic Bioinformatics Engineer to join our dynamic team in Oxford. Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain robust and scalable bioinformatics pipelines for the analysis of nanopore sequencing data.
- Implement and optimise algorithms for basecalling, alignment, variant calling, methylation detection, and other genomic applications.
- Collaborate with R&D scientists to understand biological requirements and translate them into efficient computational solutions.
- Develop and deploy bioinformatics tools and software using best practices for code quality, documentation, and version control.
- Perform rigorous validation and benchmarking of tools and pipelines to ensure accuracy and performance.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of existing bioinformatics infrastructure and workflows.
- Provide technical support and expertise to internal teams and external collaborators regarding data analysis.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in bioinformatics, genomics, and sequencing technologies.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in Python and/or C++ for bioinformatics software development.
- Strong understanding of fundamental bioinformatics algorithms and data structures.
- Experience with next-generation sequencing data analysis (e.g., alignment, variant calling).
- Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git).
- Experience working in a Linux/Unix environment.
- Knowledge of common bioinformatics tools and databases (e.g., samtools, bcftools, GATK).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Experience with workflow management systems (e.g., Nextflow, Snakemake).
- Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP) and containerisation technologies (e.g., Docker, Singularity).
- Understanding of statistics and machine learning applied to biological data.
- Experience with high-throughput data processing and parallel computing.
- Knowledge of nanopore sequencing technology and its applications.
