Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Gallery Assistant to join our dynamic visual arts team at The Lowry. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone passionate about the arts, keen to contribute to a vibrant cultural institution, and committed to providing an exceptional visitor experience. As a Gallery Assistant, you will be the welcoming face of our galleries, playing a crucial role in ensuring the safety of our artworks, the comfort of our visitors, and the overall smooth operation of our exhibition spaces. You will engage with a diverse public, from local families to international tourists, sharing information about our exhibitions and the history of The Lowry. This role is far more than just supervision; it’s about creating an inviting atmosphere, inspiring curiosity, and facilitating meaningful interactions with art. You will work closely with other gallery staff, curators, and visitor services teams to maintain the highest standards of presentation and visitor engagement. This position offers a unique insight into the daily operations of a major arts centre and provides excellent opportunities for personal and professional development within the cultural sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Warmly greet and welcome all visitors to The Lowry's galleries, providing information and assistance as required.
  • Actively monitor gallery spaces, ensuring the safety and security of all artworks and exhibits.
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of current and upcoming exhibitions, artists, and The Lowry's history to answer visitor questions effectively.
  • Proactively engage with visitors, encouraging interaction with the artworks and enhancing their understanding and enjoyment.
  • Assist with the set-up and de-installation of exhibitions, under the guidance of the Exhibitions and Technical Teams.
  • Ensure gallery spaces are clean, tidy, and well-presented at all times, reporting any maintenance issues promptly.
  • Respond to visitor feedback and resolve minor issues professionally, escalating more complex matters to the relevant manager.
  • Adhere strictly to all health, safety, and security procedures within the galleries.
  • Assist with gallery events, workshops, and educational programmes as needed.
  • Act as a first point of contact for emergencies, following established protocols.

Required Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a friendly and approachable manner.
  • Proven experience in a customer-facing role, ideally within a cultural, retail, or hospitality environment.
  • A genuine passion for art, culture, and engaging with the public.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proactive attitude and ability to take initiative.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and public holidays as per the gallery's operating hours.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of contemporary art and artists.
  • Experience working in a gallery, museum, or exhibition space.
  • Proficiency in additional languages relevant to our visitor demographics.
  • A qualification in Art History, Museum Studies, or a related field.
  • Basic first aid certification.
