Job Description

The University of Lagos invites applications for a Junior Engineer – Mechanical Maintenance. This entry-level role is a fantastic opportunity for a proactive individual to gain hands-on experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a wide array of mechanical systems within a large institutional setting. You will work closely with experienced engineers and technicians, learning best practices in preventative and corrective maintenance, ensuring the reliability and efficiency of our critical infrastructure. This encompasses everything from HVAC systems in lecture halls and administrative blocks, to water pumping stations, generator sets powering our campus, laboratory equipment, and various other mechanical installations vital to daily operations. This role is ideal for someone passionate about practical engineering, problem-solving, and contributing to the smooth functioning of a premier educational institution. You will be instrumental in ensuring the safety, comfort, and operational continuity for thousands of students and staff. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior engineers and technicians in routine inspection, maintenance, and repair of mechanical equipment and systems (e.g., HVAC, pumps, generators, plumbing).
  • Conduct preventative maintenance tasks according to schedules and established procedures to minimize breakdowns and ensure optimal performance.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues, diagnose faults, and propose effective solutions under supervision.
  • Document maintenance activities, including work orders, repair logs, and equipment histories.
  • Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and environmental regulations in all maintenance operations.
  • Assist in the installation of new mechanical equipment and systems as required.
  • Participate in emergency repairs and respond to urgent maintenance requests across the campus.
  • Maintain an organized inventory of tools, spare parts, and consumables.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (or awaiting NYSC certificate).
  • Basic understanding of mechanical principles, systems, and components.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Proactive attitude, eagerness to learn, and a strong work ethic.
  • Proficiency in using basic hand and power tools.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and practices in an industrial or institutional setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior internship or industrial attachment experience in a maintenance department.
  • Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD or similar drafting software.
  • NYSC discharge or exemption certificate.
