As a Long-Haul Truck Driver with Imperial Logistics, you will be on the front lines, playing a direct and indispensable role in keeping the complex wheels of commerce turning, thereby directly impacting the prosperity of businesses and enhancing the quality of life for the numerous communities we proudly serve across the nation.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate heavy-duty trucks (e.g., articulated trucks, super-links) for long-haul routes across South Africa.
- Transport goods and materials to various destinations in a timely and efficient manner.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections of vehicles and associated equipment, including tyres, lights, brakes, fluid levels, and cargo securement mechanisms.
- Ensure all cargo is properly secured, documented, and accounted for before, during, and after transit, minimizing risks of damage or loss.
- Maintain accurate logbooks, delivery manifests, trip sheets, fuel receipts, and other required documentation, both manual and electronic, ensuring compliance with transport regulations.
- Adhere strictly to all traffic laws, national road safety regulations, company policies, and health and safety standards to ensure the well-being of yourself and others.
- Communicate effectively and proactively with dispatch, fleet management, and customers regarding delivery schedules, potential delays, route changes, and any issues encountered on the road.
- Perform minor roadside repairs when necessary (e.g., tyre changes, basic fault finding) and report any mechanical defects, breakdowns, or maintenance requirements promptly to management.
- Uphold a high level of professionalism, courtesy, and customer service when interacting with clients, loading/unloading personnel, and other stakeholders.
- Manage fuel consumption efficiently and responsibly, adhering to company guidelines and best practices for cost management.
- Comply with all regulatory requirements related to driver hours of service, vehicle weight restrictions, hazardous materials transportation (if applicable), and environmental protocols.
Required Skills
- Valid Code EC (or EC1, EC1 0.4) driver's license with a PrDP (Professional Driving Permit) for heavy goods vehicles, in good standing.
- Minimum of 3 years (36 months) of verifiable, hands-on long-haul truck driving experience in South Africa.
- Proven track record of safe driving, demonstrated by a clean driving record and adherence to all traffic laws.
- Exceptional knowledge of South African road networks, major long-distance routes, and geographical regions.
- Ability to perform thorough pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections consistently.
- Strong understanding of heavy vehicle maintenance, basic troubleshooting, and preventive care.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly report details and follow instructions.
- Ability to work independently, demonstrate strong self-management, and effectively manage time under pressure.
- Physical fitness and stamina required to handle long hours of driving and occasional manual handling of cargo or equipment.
- A clean criminal record and driving history, subject to background checks.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent (NQF Level 4) or relevant vocational training.
- Certification in defensive driving, advanced driver training, or hazardous materials handling.
- Experience with specific types of cargo such as hazardous materials, abnormal loads, or temperature-controlled goods, along with associated permits and regulations.
- Familiarity with modern telematics systems, GPS navigation software, and electronic logging devices (ELDs).
- Current First Aid certification and basic emergency response training.
