The Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS) is seeking a dedicated Revenue Officer to join our team, specifically focused on local government revenue generation and compliance in Makurdi, Benue. In this critical role, you will be instrumental in identifying, assessing, collecting, and accounting for various revenues, taxes, levies, and fees at the local government level. You will work closely with local government authorities, businesses, and citizens to ensure compliance with relevant tax laws and regulations, contributing directly to the funding of essential community services and infrastructure projects. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular assessments and re-assessments of taxable individuals, businesses, and properties within assigned local government areas.
  • Efficiently collect various taxes, levies, rates, and fees as prescribed by relevant state and local government laws.
  • Issue assessment notices, demand notices, and receipts to taxpayers, ensuring accuracy and proper documentation.
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with tax laws and regulations through field visits, audits, and investigations.
  • Educate taxpayers on their civic responsibilities and the importance of timely tax payments.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all revenue collections, assessments, and taxpayer information.
  • Prepare periodic reports on revenue performance, challenges, and recommendations for improvement.
  • Collaborate with other government agencies and departments to streamline revenue collection processes.
  • Handle taxpayer inquiries, disputes, and complaints professionally and in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Propose and implement strategies to enhance revenue generation and combat tax evasion and avoidance.
  • Participate in training and development programs to stay abreast of changes in tax laws and collection techniques.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in revenue collection, accounting, or a related financial role.
  • Strong understanding of Nigerian tax laws, particularly those applicable to state and local governments.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities with a keen attention to detail.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience with financial software.
  • High level of integrity, ethical conduct, and accountability.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel within assigned local government areas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or HND in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Membership in a recognized professional body (e.g., ICAN, ANAN, CITN).
  • Previous experience working with a government agency or parastatal.
  • Familiarity with the socio-economic landscape and local customs of Makurdi and Benue State.
