Job Description
We are seeking a highly dedicated and experienced Fisherman to join our vibrant team at the Akwa Ibom State Fish Farm, specifically operating within our freshwater aquaculture facilities and responsibly managing local river systems accessible from Ikot Ekpene. This critical role encompasses the daily tasks associated with comprehensive fish farming operations, including meticulous pond management, precise fish feeding regimens, vigilant monitoring of fish health, and the systematic, humane harvesting of fish using various traditional and modern fishing techniques specifically adapted for freshwater environments. The successful candidate will be an indispensable part of our entire production cycle, playing a key role in ensuring the healthy growth, optimal conditions, and timely delivery of our premium fish products to local markets and distribution networks. This position demands a strong work ethic, exceptional physical endurance, a keen intuitive understanding of fish behavior, and an unwavering commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible fishing practices. Key Responsibilities
- Operate, maintain, and ensure the proper functioning of a variety of fishing equipment, including different types of nets, traps, fishing rods, and other specialized tools.
- Conduct thorough daily checks on fish ponds, cages, and designated river sections to monitor critical environmental conditions such as water quality parameters (pH, oxygen levels), temperature, and clarity.
- Administer fish feed precisely according to established schedules, species-specific dietary requirements, and observed feeding behaviors to promote healthy growth and minimize waste.
- Vigilantly monitor fish health, identify early signs of disease, parasites, or distress, and accurately report findings to farm supervisors and veterinary staff for prompt intervention.
- Actively participate in the systematic harvesting, careful sorting by size and species, and initial processing or preparation of fish for market or further distribution.
- Ensure the highest standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and proper maintenance for all fishing gear, boats, equipment, and general farm facilities to prevent contamination and ensure longevity.
- Adhere strictly to all organizational safety protocols, relevant environmental regulations, and best practices for sustainable aquaculture, including waste management.
- Assist proficiently with the efficient loading and unloading of harvested fish, fish feed, and other related supplies, often involving manual handling and lifting.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of daily catches, feed consumption, water quality readings, and other relevant production data for reporting and analysis.
- Collaborate effectively and professionally with all team members and supervisors to foster a productive environment and consistently meet or exceed production goals.
- Participate in routine maintenance of pond structures, aeration systems, water pumps, and other essential farm infrastructure.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in freshwater fishing or aquaculture practices, ideally with local species.
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining various fishing nets, traps, and small boats (e.g., canoes, paddle boats).
- Basic understanding of fish biology, behavior, and aquaculture principles.
- Strong physical stamina and ability to perform demanding tasks in various weather conditions.
- Excellent observation skills and meticulous attention to detail for monitoring fish health and water quality.

Preferred Qualifications

- In-depth experience with specific local freshwater fish species common in Akwa Ibom (e.g., Tilapia, Catfish).
- Knowledge of basic fish processing and preservation techniques, such as gutting, scaling, and icing.
