Key Responsibilities
- Operate heavy and specialized commercial vehicles for long-haul freight transportation across designated routes, including cross-county and potentially cross-border operations.
- Conduct thorough and systematic pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections of vehicles and trailers, ensuring full compliance with roadworthiness and safety standards.
- Safely and meticulously load, unload, and secure various types of cargo, strictly adhering to weight distribution guidelines, cargo securement regulations, and company safety procedures.
- Adhere strictly to all national and regional traffic laws, transportation regulations, company safety policies, and hours-of-service mandates.
- Maintain accurate, detailed, and up-to-date logbooks, delivery manifests, inspection reports, and all other required documentation.
- Communicate effectively and proactively with dispatchers, logistics managers, and other team members regarding delivery schedules, potential delays, route changes, and any on-road issues.
- Perform basic vehicle maintenance checks, troubleshoot minor mechanical issues, and ensure the interior and exterior cleanliness of the assigned vehicle.
- Plan optimal routes efficiently to ensure timely delivery, maximize fuel efficiency, and minimize operational costs.
- Represent Kenya Railways Corporation professionally and courteously to clients, partners, and the general public at all times.
- Manage time effectively to meet stringent delivery deadlines while ensuring full compliance with mandatory rest periods and fatigue management protocols.
Required Skills
- Valid Class G or CE driving license (Kenyan equivalent for heavy commercial vehicles) with a minimum of 3 years demonstrable experience and a clean driving record.
- Proven extensive experience in long-haul freight transportation, preferably within Kenya and East African corridors.
- Excellent, in-depth knowledge of Kenyan traffic laws, road safety regulations, and HGV operation standards.
- Strong defensive driving skills, acute awareness of road hazards, and a proactive approach to accident prevention.
- Ability to perform basic vehicle maintenance checks, identify potential mechanical issues, and conduct minor roadside repairs.
- Proficiency in advanced cargo securing techniques for diverse loads, including general freight and potentially specialized cargo.
- Good geographical knowledge of Kenya, especially major transport corridors, industrial zones, and border points.
- Exceptional ability to work independently, make sound judgments on the road, and manage time effectively under pressure.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for reporting, documentation, and coordination.
- Physical fitness and stamina to handle long hours of driving and occasional manual tasks associated with cargo handling.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certificate or demonstrable completion of a Defensive Driving or Advanced Driver Training program from a recognized institution.
- Experience with specialized cargo transportation (e.g., hazardous materials, oversized loads) with relevant endorsements or certifications.
- Familiarity and proficiency with electronic logging devices (ELDs) and advanced GPS navigation systems.
- Knowledge of cross-border customs procedures and documentation, particularly relevant to operations at the Taveta border.
- Certification in First Aid and basic emergency response training.
