Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Power Plant Operator to manage the operations of our small-scale local power generation facility in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti. This critical role involves overseeing the daily functions of generators, switchgear, transformers, and control systems to ensure an uninterrupted and efficient power supply to the local grid. The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring plant performance, conducting routine inspections, performing minor maintenance tasks, and responding promptly to operational issues or emergencies. You will work closely with our engineering and maintenance teams to uphold the highest standards of safety, reliability, and environmental compliance, ensuring our facility operates seamlessly and contributes positively to the community’s power needs.

As a Power Plant Operator, you will be the front-line guardian of our local energy infrastructure, ensuring that power generation is optimized and any disruptions are swiftly addressed. This role requires a keen eye for detail, a strong mechanical and electrical aptitude, and a proactive approach to maintaining operational integrity. Your contributions will directly impact the daily lives and economic activities of residents and businesses in Ado-Ekiti, making this a highly impactful position within our local operations team. We are looking for someone who is not only skilled in plant operations but also deeply committed to providing essential services to the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor power generation equipment, including diesel/gas generators, switchgear, transformers, and auxiliary systems, to ensure continuous and efficient power supply.
  • Perform routine inspections, readings, and tests of plant equipment, logging data accurately and identifying any deviations from normal operating parameters.
  • Implement and adhere to all safety protocols, operational procedures, and environmental regulations to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance tasks, including cleaning, lubrication, and basic repairs, to prolong equipment life and prevent breakdowns.
  • Respond promptly to alarms, emergencies, and power outages, troubleshooting operational issues and initiating corrective actions or escalating to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain detailed operational logs, reports, and records of plant performance, maintenance activities, and incidents.
  • Collaborate with maintenance technicians and engineers on complex repairs, upgrades, and system improvements.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and orderliness of the power plant facility and control room.
  • Participate in training programs to stay updated with industry best practices and technological advancements.
  • Assist in the development and revision of operating procedures and safety guidelines, contributing to continuous improvement.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 2 years) in power plant operations or a similar heavy industrial setting.
  • Strong understanding of electrical power generation principles, distribution systems, and safety protocols.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and operational diagrams.
  • Proficiency in monitoring control panels and operating automated systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills under pressure.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Commitment to safety and adherence to operational procedures.
  • Basic computer literacy for data entry and report generation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • OND/HND in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Power Systems Technology, or a related field.
  • Relevant certifications in power plant operations or industrial safety.
  • Experience with diesel/gas generators and synchronized grid operations.
  • Familiarity with local power distribution network infrastructure in Ekiti State and regulatory requirements.
