Job Description

Join Lambeth Council as a Street Cleansing Operative and become a vital part of keeping Brixton, London, clean and vibrant. As a Street Cleansing Operative, you will be on the front lines, ensuring our streets, parks, and public spaces are free from litter, graffiti, and other environmental detriments. You will be working outdoors in all weather conditions, collaborating with a dedicated team, and interacting with the public, representing the council’s commitment to a cleaner Lambeth. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily litter picking, sweeping, and removal of refuse from streets, pavements, and public spaces within designated areas of Brixton.
  • Empty and clean public litter bins and dog waste bins, ensuring they are maintained to a high standard.
  • Operate specialist cleansing equipment, including mechanical sweepers and pressure washers, safely and efficiently (training provided).
  • Identify and report instances of fly-tipping, graffiti, hazardous waste, and other environmental infractions to relevant teams for appropriate action.
  • Respond to public complaints and requests regarding street cleanliness in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Adhere strictly to all health and safety regulations and council policies while carrying out duties.
  • Work effectively as part of a team, demonstrating reliability, punctuality, and a positive attitude.
  • Maintain a high standard of personal presentation and wear issued protective clothing at all times.

Required Skills

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and walking for extended periods.
  • Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work effectively outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Basic communication skills to interact with colleagues and the public.
  • Understanding and commitment to health and safety procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in street cleansing or a similar outdoor maintenance role.
  • A full UK driving license (Class B) for operating council vehicles.
  • Knowledge of the Brixton area and its community.
  • Experience operating basic cleaning or grounds maintenance machinery.
