Key Responsibilities
- Operate heavy-duty trucks and trailers for long-distance routes across South Africa.
- Transport goods safely and efficiently, adhering to strict schedules and delivery deadlines.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment to ensure roadworthiness and compliance.
- Ensure proper loading, securing, and offloading of cargo to prevent damage during transit.
- Maintain accurate logbooks, delivery notes, and other required documentation.
- Adhere strictly to all traffic laws, company safety policies, and industry regulations.
- Communicate effectively with dispatch, clients, and team members regarding delivery status, delays, or issues.
- Manage fuel consumption and perform minor roadside repairs if necessary.
- Represent Unitrans professionally at all times.
- Participate in ongoing safety and compliance training programs.
Required Skills
- Valid Code EC (formerly Code 14) driving license with PDP (Professional Driving Permit)
- Minimum 3 years (36 months) of verifiable long-distance heavy vehicle driving experience
- Clean driving record with no major traffic violations or accidents
- Proven ability to operate various types of heavy-duty trucks and trailers
- Strong understanding of national road traffic laws and regulations
- Excellent spatial awareness and defensive driving skills
- Physical fitness and stamina to handle long hours of driving and occasional manual labour
- Basic mechanical knowledge for routine vehicle checks and minor troubleshooting
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to complete necessary paperwork accurately and on time
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with specific cargo types (e.g., bulk, hazardous materials)
- Advanced driving courses or certifications
- Geographical knowledge of major routes and industrial hubs within South Africa
- Experience with fleet management technology (e.g., GPS tracking, telematics)
- First Aid certification
