Job Description
BSS Consulting is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Environmental Officer to join our dynamic team in Abuja. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in delivering comprehensive environmental consultancy services to our diverse client base across various industries, including oil and gas, infrastructure, manufacturing, and public sector. You will be responsible for managing and executing a wide range of environmental projects, from initial impact assessments and audits to developing sustainable management plans and ensuring regulatory compliance. This position requires a professional with a robust understanding of Nigerian environmental legislation, international standards (e.g., IFC Performance Standards, Equator Principles), and a proven track record in applying these principles to real-world projects. You will act as a key technical resource, guiding clients through environmental challenges, preparing high-quality reports, and contributing to the strategic growth of our environmental practice. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong analytical skills, exceptional communication abilities, and a commitment to fostering environmental stewardship and sustainability in all engagements. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), Environmental Audits (EAs), Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs), and Post-Impact Assessments (PIAs) in accordance with national regulations and international best practices.
- Develop and implement Environmental Management Plans (EMPs), Waste Management Plans (WMPs), and other sector-specific environmental strategies.
- Perform site assessments, data collection, sampling, and analysis to evaluate environmental conditions and potential impacts.
- Liaise effectively with regulatory bodies such as NESREA, DPR, and state environmental agencies to secure necessary permits and approvals for client projects.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, proposals, presentations, and other deliverables for clients and regulatory authorities.
- Provide expert environmental advice and support to clients, ensuring their projects adhere to environmental laws and achieve sustainability objectives.
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources efficiently, ensuring timely and high-quality project delivery.
- Contribute to business development activities by identifying new opportunities and assisting in the preparation of bids and proposals.
- Stay abreast of evolving environmental legislation, industry standards, and emerging best practices.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 4 years of proven experience in environmental consulting or a related field in Nigeria.
- Strong knowledge of Nigerian environmental laws, regulations (e.g., NESREA Act, EIA Act), and international environmental standards.
- Demonstrable experience in conducting EIAs, EAs, ESIAs, and developing environmental management systems.
- Excellent technical report writing, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in environmental data analysis and relevant software tools.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging with clients, regulators, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Project management capabilities, including planning, execution, and monitoring of environmental projects.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced consulting environment.
- Possession of relevant professional certifications (e.g., NESREA accredited consultant).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience with environmental modeling software or GIS applications.
- Prior experience working on projects funded by international organizations (e.g., World Bank, AfDB, IFC).
- Membership in relevant professional bodies (e.g., IEMA, NIESV, IPAN).
- Specific experience in the oil & gas, mining, or large-scale infrastructure sectors.
