Job Description
Mhlabunzima Construction is seeking highly skilled and experienced Construction Painters and Decorators to join our team on a project-by-project basis in Mahikeng, North West. This is a fantastic opportunity for dedicated professionals who excel in transforming spaces with precision and artistry. As a project-based Construction Painter – Decorator, you will be instrumental in completing various painting and decorating tasks across our diverse range of construction projects, which may include new builds, renovations, and maintenance works for residential, commercial, or public sector clients.
Your primary role will involve expertly preparing surfaces for painting, applying paint, stains, varnishes, and other finishes, as well as decorative elements to walls, ceilings, and other structures. You will be expected to work with a variety of materials and tools, ensuring a flawless finish that adheres to architectural plans and client specifications. A keen eye for detail, a steady hand, and a commitment to high-quality finishes are crucial for this role, as you will be directly contributing to the aesthetic appeal and longevity of our projects. Key Responsibilities
- Prepare various surfaces (walls, ceilings, woodwork, metal, etc.) for painting by cleaning, sanding, scraping, filling holes and cracks, and applying appropriate primers or sealers.
- Mix, match, and apply paints, varnishes, stains, and other finishes using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment, ensuring even and consistent application.
- Apply decorative finishes, textures, and wallpapers as required by project specifications and design briefs.
- Erect and dismantle scaffolding, working platforms, and ladders safely, following all health and safety regulations.
- Protect surrounding areas, furniture, and non-painted surfaces with drop cloths and masking tape to prevent damage or spills.
- Inspect work areas and equipment to ensure they are safe and adhere to company, industry, and national safety standards (e.g., OHSA).
- Maintain a clean and organised work environment, ensuring tools and equipment are properly cared for, cleaned, and stored after each use.
- Collaborate effectively with site managers, architects, interior designers, and other tradespeople to ensure seamless project execution and timely completion.
- Perform rigorous quality checks on finished work to ensure adherence to project specifications, aesthetic standards, and client satisfaction.
- Estimate material and labour costs for specific painting and decorating tasks when requested, assisting in project planning and budgeting.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Construction Painter or Decorator, with a portfolio showcasing diverse project work.
- Excellent knowledge of painting techniques, materials, and equipment, including spray painting and brushwork.
- Proficiency in comprehensive surface preparation, including patching, sanding, priming, and minor repairs.
- Ability to accurately mix and match colors, understanding color theory and client requirements.
- Strong understanding and adherence to health and safety regulations on construction sites.
- Meticulous attention to detail and a steadfast commitment to delivering high-quality, durable, and aesthetically pleasing finishes.
- Physical stamina, dexterity, and the ability to perform demanding tasks, including prolonged standing, bending, lifting, and working at heights.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications accurately.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant trade certification or vocational training in painting and decorating.
- Experience with specialized decorative finishes (e.g., faux finishes, murals, stenciling).
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to various project sites across Mahikeng and surrounding areas.
- First Aid and/or Scaffolding Erection certification.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Setswana.
