Job Description

Golden Hills Farms Orlu is seeking a dedicated and experienced Livestock Specialist to join our dynamic team. This pivotal role involves overseeing the daily care, health, and productivity of our diverse livestock, including cattle, poultry, and goats. The Livestock Specialist will be instrumental in implementing best practices in animal husbandry, ensuring optimal welfare, nutrition, and breeding programs. You will be responsible for monitoring animal health, identifying and treating illnesses, managing feed regimes, and maintaining meticulous records of all livestock activities. This position requires a proactive individual with a passion for animal welfare, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a farm environment. The successful candidate will contribute directly to the efficiency and success of our farm operations, upholding our commitment to quality and sustainability. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily feeding, watering, and general care of all livestock on the farm, including cattle, poultry, and goats.
  • Implement and monitor breeding programs, assisting with births and ensuring the health of newborns.
  • Conduct regular health checks, identify signs of illness or injury, and administer treatments as advised by a veterinarian.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of livestock inventory, feeding schedules, health treatments, breeding cycles, and production data.
  • Oversee and manage feed supplies, ensuring proper storage and distribution to minimize waste and maximize nutritional value.
  • Ensure the cleanliness, hygiene, and maintenance of all animal housing, pens, and enclosures.
  • Assist in the movement and handling of livestock for various farm activities, adhering to safety protocols.
  • Participate in vaccination programs and other preventive health measures.
  • Train and supervise junior farmhands or new staff on best practices in animal handling and care.
  • Report any unusual observations, incidents, or challenges to farm management promptly.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of farm management practices and animal welfare standards.

Required Skills

  • Proven expertise in animal husbandry and livestock management (minimum 2 years).
  • Strong knowledge of livestock health, nutrition, and disease prevention.
  • Ability to identify and diagnose common animal illnesses and injuries.
  • Proficiency in record-keeping and data management related to livestock.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Physical stamina and ability to perform demanding tasks in various weather conditions.
  • Commitment to ethical animal welfare practices and sustainable farming.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technology, Agriculture, or a related field.
  • Experience with specific breeds of cattle, poultry, or goats common to the Nigerian context.
  • Familiarity with local agricultural practices and challenges in Imo State.
  • Basic understanding of farm machinery operation and maintenance.
  • Valid driver's license.
