Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Gardener to join our Estate Maintenance team at Amberfield Retirement Village. This full-time, on-site position is crucial for maintaining the beauty and health of our extensive gardens and communal outdoor areas. The ideal candidate will possess a passion for horticulture, a keen eye for detail, and a strong work ethic. You will be responsible for a wide range of landscaping duties, ensuring that our grounds are always immaculately presented, safe, and enjoyable for our residents. This role requires hands-on involvement in all aspects of garden and landscape care, from planting and pruning to irrigation and pest management. You will work as part of a supportive team, contributing significantly to the overall aesthetic and well-being of our vibrant community. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform regular garden maintenance including mowing lawns, weeding, pruning, hedge trimming, and raking.
  • Plant new trees, shrubs, flowers, and groundcovers as per landscaping plans.
  • Monitor and maintain irrigation systems, ensuring efficient water usage.
  • Identify and treat plant diseases, pests, and nutrient deficiencies.
  • Apply fertilisers and other treatments responsibly and safely.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of gardening tools and equipment, ensuring their safe use and proper storage.
  • Assist with general estate maintenance tasks as required, including minor repairs to garden structures.
  • Keep garden areas tidy, free of debris, and aesthetically pleasing at all times.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations and environmental best practices.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions or significant garden issues to the Estate Manager promptly.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in gardening, landscaping, or groundskeeping.
  • Solid knowledge of plant care, including pruning, planting, and pest control techniques.
  • Ability to operate various gardening equipment (e.g., lawnmowers, trimmers, blowers) safely and efficiently.
  • Physical fitness and stamina to perform strenuous outdoor tasks in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to garden maintenance.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work effectively within a team.
  • A valid South African driver’s license (Code B/8).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Horticulture certificate or relevant vocational training.
  • Experience with irrigation system maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of indigenous KwaZulu-Natal plant species.
  • Previous experience in a retirement village or similar large estate environment.
