Are you a meticulous, highly organized, and proactive individual with a deep understanding of international trade regulations and logistics? GIG Logistics is seeking a dedicated Import/Export Agent to join our vibrant team in Onitsha, Anambra. This pivotal role is essential for ensuring the smooth and compliant movement of goods across borders, playing a crucial part in our mission to simplify global trade for our diverse clientele. As an Import/Export Agent in Onitsha, you will be at the forefront of facilitating commerce in one of Nigeria’s most vital commercial hubs. Your expertise will directly impact our operational efficiency and customer satisfaction, navigating the complexities of customs procedures, documentation, and coordination with various stakeholders. This role demands exceptional attention to detail, a strong grasp of both local and international trade laws, and the ability to communicate effectively with clients, customs officials, and internal teams. You will be responsible for managing the entire lifecycle of import and export shipments, from initial booking and documentation to final delivery, ensuring adherence to all regulatory requirements and company standards. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee the end-to-end import and export processes, ensuring compliance with all international trade regulations and local customs laws.
  • Prepare, review, and submit all necessary documentation for customs clearance, including bills of lading, commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, and import/export declarations.
  • Liaise effectively with customs officials, shipping lines, airlines, freight forwarders, and clients to ensure timely and efficient movement of goods.
  • Track and monitor shipment statuses, providing regular updates to clients and resolving any issues or delays proactively.
  • Calculate and verify duties, taxes, and other charges associated with shipments, ensuring accuracy and proper billing.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of changes in customs regulations, trade policies, and industry best practices relevant to Nigeria and international trade.
  • Conduct thorough record-keeping and data entry for all import/export activities, utilizing company systems and maintaining digital and physical archives.
  • Assist clients with inquiries regarding shipping procedures, documentation requirements, and customs compliance, offering expert advice.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, reduce operational costs, and mitigate risks.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (e.g., sales, warehousing, transport) to ensure seamless coordination and integrated service delivery.
  • Handle customs audits and inspections, ensuring all documentation is readily available and accurate.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 3 years) in import/export operations or freight forwarding.
  • In-depth knowledge of Nigerian customs procedures, tariffs, and international trade regulations (e.g., Incoterms).
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and multitasking skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities, with proficiency in English.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and comfortable with logistics software.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong analytical problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Professional certification in Customs Brokerage, Freight Forwarding, or International Trade (e.g., FIATA Diploma).
  • Experience with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems or dedicated customs clearance platforms.
  • Familiarity with the West African trade routes, economic landscape, and regional customs agreements.
  • Ability to speak local languages in Anambra State is a plus.
