Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Religious Leader (Pastor/Minister) to provide spiritual guidance, pastoral care, and visionary leadership to the Moravian Church Wupperthal. This pivotal role involves nurturing the spiritual lives of our congregation, engaging actively with the broader Wupperthal community, and upholding the rich traditions and values of the Moravian Church. The ideal candidate will be a shepherd to our flock, delivering inspiring sermons, facilitating worship services, and offering compassionate support during times of joy and sorrow. Beyond the pulpit, you will be instrumental in community outreach, youth engagement, and educational initiatives, ensuring that our church remains a beacon of hope and a center for holistic development. You will work collaboratively with church elders and community leaders to foster unity, address local needs, and promote the Moravian principles of service and fellowship. This is more than a job; it is a calling to serve a unique and historic community, helping to sustain its spiritual vitality and cultural heritage for generations to come. Your leadership will be key in guiding our congregation through contemporary challenges while honoring our profound historical roots and fostering a sense of belonging among all members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular worship services, including sermons, sacraments, and spiritual rituals.
  • Provide pastoral care, counseling, and spiritual guidance to congregants and community members.
  • Officiate at life events such as baptisms, weddings, and funerals.
  • Lead and participate in community outreach programs and social initiatives.
  • Develop and implement educational programs for children, youth, and adults.
  • Collaborate with church leadership (elders, committees) on administrative and strategic matters.
  • Represent the Moravian Church Wupperthal in interfaith and civic community engagements.
  • Promote Moravian theological principles and cultural heritage within the community.
  • Oversee church administration, including records, finances (in conjunction with treasurer), and property maintenance.
  • Encourage active participation and fellowship among congregants.

Required Skills

  • Ordained minister or equivalent recognized religious leader status.
  • Profound understanding and adherence to Moravian theology and doctrines.
  • Exceptional public speaking and preaching abilities.
  • Strong pastoral care and counseling skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and organizational capabilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to engage effectively with diverse age groups and cultural backgrounds.
  • Commitment to community service and social justice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Divinity (M.Div.) or equivalent theological degree.
  • Previous experience serving in a rural or mission-based community.
  • Proficiency in Afrikaans and/or Khoisan languages relevant to the local community.
  • Experience in church administration and financial oversight.
  • Proven track record of successful community development initiatives.
