Job Description
Checkers Malmesbury is seeking a dedicated and energetic Trolley Porter to join our friendly and fast-paced team. This crucial role is the first point of contact for many of our valued customers and plays a vital part in ensuring a seamless and pleasant shopping experience from the moment they arrive until they leave. As a Trolley Porter, you will be responsible for maintaining an organised, safe, and easily accessible supply of shopping trolleys for our patrons, both within the store perimeter and in the parking lot. You will be a key contributor to the overall tidiness and operational efficiency of our store’s exterior and entrance areas, directly impacting customer satisfaction. This position demands a keen eye for detail, a proactive approach to maintaining cleanliness, and the physical stamina required to perform duties in various weather conditions. You will also be expected to assist customers with enquiries, provide directions, and offer a helping hand with packing groceries into trolleys or vehicles when necessary, always upholding Checkers’ high standards of customer service. Key Responsibilities
- Collect, organise, and return shopping trolleys from designated collection points in the parking lot and store premises.
- Ensure a continuous and readily available supply of clean, functional shopping trolleys at store entrances for customer use.
- Regularly inspect trolleys for damage or defects, reporting any issues to management for repair or removal.
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the parking lot, store entrance, and trolley bays by removing litter and debris.
- Assist customers with loading groceries into trolleys or vehicles, offering a polite and helpful service.
- Provide friendly and courteous assistance to customers, answering basic queries and directing them as needed.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety and security policies and procedures, including those related to trolley management and parking lot safety.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues and management to ensure smooth operations.
- Be proactive in identifying and addressing potential hazards or areas needing attention in the external store environment.
- Work flexible hours, including weekends, public holidays, and shifts as per operational requirements.
Required Skills
- Physical stamina and ability to stand, walk, push, and pull trolleys for extended periods.
- Excellent customer service skills with a friendly and approachable demeanor.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced retail environment.
- Strong sense of responsibility and reliability.
- Good communication skills (verbal, English and/or Afrikaans).
- Ability to perform duties outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Basic understanding of health and safety protocols.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a retail or customer service role (e.g., general assistant, cleaner).
- A matric certificate or equivalent qualification.
- Reside within Malmesbury or surrounding areas with reliable transport.
