Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Recycling Plant Supervisor to lead our operations at the Rooiwal, Northern Cape facility. This is a pivotal role for an individual who is passionate about sustainability, possesses strong leadership capabilities, and has a proven track record in managing industrial recycling processes. As a Recycling Plant Supervisor, you will be responsible for the day-to-day oversight of our recycling operations, ensuring maximum efficiency, uncompromising safety compliance, and strict adherence to all environmental standards and regulatory requirements. You will manage a dedicated team of plant operators, sorters, and general labourers, providing guidance, training, and performance evaluations to foster a high-performing and engaged workforce. Your duties will include coordinating the efficient flow of incoming recyclable materials, managing sorting, processing, and baling activities, and ensuring the quality and quantity of outgoing recycled products meet our stringent specifications. You will oversee the preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of plant machinery, including balers, conveyors, shredders, and forklifts, working closely with maintenance teams to minimise downtime and extend equipment lifespan. This role requires a hands-on approach, excellent problem-solving skills to address operational challenges swiftly, and the ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced industrial environment. You will be instrumental in fostering a safe and productive work culture, driving continuous improvement initiatives, and contributing directly to our mission of responsible waste management and circular economy principles. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of various recycling methodologies, strong mechanical aptitude, exceptional organisational skills, and the ability to motivate and develop a skilled workforce. Furthermore, you will be responsible for maintaining accurate production records, managing inventory of consumables, and reporting on key performance indicators to senior management. Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily operations of the recycling plant, ensuring efficiency and adherence to production targets.
  • Manage, train, and mentor plant staff, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
  • Implement and enforce strict health, safety, and environmental (HSE) protocols and regulations.
  • Oversee the sorting, processing, and baling of various recyclable materials.
  • Conduct regular inspections of machinery and equipment, coordinating with maintenance for repairs and preventative upkeep.
  • Monitor inventory of incoming raw materials and outgoing recycled products.
  • Optimise plant layout and processes to improve material recovery rates and reduce waste.
  • Maintain accurate operational records, including production data, incident reports, and staff attendance.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance operational performance and cost-effectiveness.
  • Ensure compliance with all local and national waste management legislation and company policies.

Required Skills

  • Proven leadership and team management skills (minimum 3 years in a supervisory role).
  • Strong knowledge of recycling processes and waste management practices.
  • Excellent understanding of health, safety, and environmental (HSE) regulations.
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience with plant machinery (balers, conveyors, shredders, forklifts).
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making abilities under pressure.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (MS Office suite).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Operations Management, or a related field.
  • Relevant certifications in waste management, safety, or plant operations.
  • Experience with Lean manufacturing or Six Sigma principles.
  • Knowledge of South African waste management legislation.
  • Forklift operator certification.
