Job Description
We are seeking a talented and experienced Upholsterer to join our growing team at Cassel Craft Upholstery. This is a unique opportunity for a dedicated artisan to apply their skills in a welcoming, community-focused environment. As a Skilled Upholsterer, you will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, from the careful disassembling and reassembling of various furniture pieces to the meticulous cutting and sewing of fabrics, and the precise application of stuffing and springs. Your expertise will be crucial in restoring antique furniture, repairing contemporary pieces, and crafting bespoke upholstered items to our clients’ specifications. The working hours will generally be standard business hours, Monday to Friday, with occasional flexibility required based on project deadlines and client needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Disassemble various types of furniture, carefully removing old fabric, padding, and springs while preserving usable components.
- Inspect frames, springs, webbing, and internal structures for damage, and perform necessary repairs or reinforcements.
- Cut, sew, and fit new fabric, leather, or vinyl materials accurately according to patterns, client specifications, and design integrity.
- Apply padding, foam, and springs, ensuring proper tension, comfort, structural integrity, and aesthetic appeal.
- Operate a variety of hand and power tools, including pneumatic staple guns, industrial sewing machines, cutting tools, and specialized upholstery equipment safely and efficiently.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace, adhering strictly to all workshop safety protocols and standards.
- Collaborate effectively with clients to understand their vision, discuss material options, and provide expert advice on design, durability, and fabric care.
- Perform thorough quality checks on all finished pieces to ensure they meet our high standards of craftsmanship and client satisfaction.
- Manage and maintain inventory of fabrics, foams, threads, and other upholstery supplies, reporting needs and assisting with ordering as they arise.
- Contribute actively to the continuous improvement of workshop processes, techniques, and overall operational efficiency.
Required Skills
- Proven experience of at least 3 years as an Upholsterer, demonstrating proficiency in both traditional and modern upholstery techniques.
- Expertise in cutting, sewing, and fitting various upholstery materials, including delicate fabrics, durable leathers, and robust vinyls.
- Strong knowledge of furniture construction, frame types, spring systems, webbing, and various padding materials.
- Proficiency in operating industrial sewing machines, pattern cutting, and other essential upholstery tools.
- Exceptional hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and physical stamina for demanding tasks.
- Strong attention to detail and an unwavering commitment to high-quality workmanship and finishing.
- Ability to read and accurately interpret design specifications, blueprints, and fabric patterns.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently on projects from start to finish.
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal training, apprenticeship, or certification in upholstery, furniture restoration, or a related craft.
- Demonstrated experience with specific antique furniture restoration techniques and historical styles.
- Basic knowledge of wood repair, sanding, staining, and finishing techniques applicable to furniture frames.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and clearly with clients and team members.
- A professional portfolio showcasing examples of previous upholstery work and projects.
