Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and portion food items according to established recipes and production schedules, ensuring consistency and quality.
- Wash, chop, peel, and prepare ingredients such as vegetables, fruits, and various meats for an array of dishes, salads, and baked goods.
- Assist in the cooking, baking, and assembly of both hot and cold meals, including sandwiches, salads, roasted items, and fresh pastries.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary work environment at all times, adhering strictly to all food safety and hygiene regulations, including HACCP principles.
- Monitor food stock levels, assist with inventory management, and ensure proper storage, labeling, and rotation of all perishable and non-perishable goods to minimize waste.
- Operate kitchen equipment safely and efficiently, including slicers, ovens, grills, mixers, and other tools relevant to food preparation.
- Assist with the aesthetic presentation and appealing display of food items within the deli and bakery sections to attract customers.
- Collaborate effectively with team members, including other food preparers, cooks, and deli staff, to ensure smooth kitchen operations and timely service delivery.
- Report any equipment malfunctions, food quality issues, or concerns regarding health and safety to the supervisor immediately.
- Provide excellent service by courteously assisting customers with queries regarding food items, ingredients, and allergen information when necessary.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in food preparation or a similar kitchen-related role.
- Strong understanding and strict adherence to food safety, hygiene, and sanitation standards.
- Ability to accurately follow recipes and verbal/written instructions.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Ability to work efficiently and collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment.
- Physical stamina to stand for extended periods, bend, lift moderate weights (up to 15 kg), and perform repetitive tasks.
- Basic knife skills and proficiency with common kitchen tools and equipment.
- High level of attention to detail and a steadfast commitment to producing high-quality, presentable food.
Preferred Qualifications
- A recognized food handler's certificate or similar qualification in food safety.
- Prior experience working specifically in a supermarket deli, bakery, or a similar catering environment.
- Basic culinary training or certification from a reputable hospitality or culinary institution.
- Knowledge of various cooking methods, food preparation techniques, and ingredient pairings.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English and/or local indigenous languages relevant to the community.
