Job Description

Are you a passionate advocate for history, culture, and community engagement? The Sutherland Museum is seeking a dedicated and visionary Museum Curator to join our team. As a local Museum Curator, you will be the heart of our interpretive and collections management efforts, playing a pivotal role in shaping the visitor experience and preserving Sutherland’s unique heritage. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, design, and implement engaging temporary and permanent exhibitions that reflect Sutherland's history, culture, and astronomical significance.
  • Manage, document, and care for the museum's collections, including accessioning, cataloging, conservation, and storage in accordance with professional standards.
  • Conduct thorough research on collections and local history to enhance interpretive materials and exhibition content, ensuring historical accuracy.
  • Create and deliver educational programs, workshops, and guided tours for diverse audiences, including schools, tourists, and community groups.
  • Oversee the physical layout and aesthetic presentation of exhibition spaces, ensuring a welcoming, accessible, and informative environment.
  • Collaborate with local historians, community members, and volunteers to identify new acquisitions, develop programming, and foster community relations.
  • Assist in grant writing and fundraising efforts to support museum operations and special projects, contributing to the museum's sustainability.
  • Manage the museum's digital presence, including online collections and social media content related to exhibitions and events, expanding our reach.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and security regulations for the museum and its collections, maintaining a safe environment.
  • Represent the museum at community events and professional gatherings, acting as an ambassador for Sutherland's heritage.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 3 years) in museum collections management, exhibition development, or cultural heritage preservation.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret historical data and artifacts effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a talent for storytelling and public speaking.
  • Proficiency in database management systems relevant to museum collections (e.g., PastPerfect, CollectiveAccess).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a small team environment, demonstrating initiative and flexibility.
  • Demonstrated exceptional organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with conservation best practices for a variety of artifact types.
  • Valid South African driver's license and own reliable transport (essential for local errands and community engagement).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Museology, Heritage Studies, History, Archaeology, or a related field.
  • Experience working in a local or community-based museum setting.
  • In-depth knowledge of Northern Cape history and culture, particularly related to the Karoo region and astronomy.
  • Experience with graphic design software for exhibition layouts and interpretive panels.
  • Fluency in Afrikaans (highly advantageous for community engagement and local communication).
  • Experience in volunteer management and training, with a collaborative leadership style.
