Job Description

This is an incredible opportunity for an enthusiastic, dedicated, and nature-loving individual to join our esteemed team as a Safari Guide Assistant at the prestigious Mkuze Falls Private Game Reserve. Nestled in the heart of Zululand, our reserve offers an unparalleled canvas for a career rooted in wildlife and conservation. As a Safari Guide Assistant, you will play a truly crucial and hands-on role in supporting our experienced and passionate Safari Guides, ensuring that every guest embarks on a safe, incredibly informative, and utterly unforgettable safari adventure. Your involvement will span the day-to-day intricate operations of guiding, commencing from the meticulous preparation of safari vehicles and essential equipment, to actively assisting with guest interactions and making significant contributions to the overall guest experience, which is the hallmark of our hospitality. This role is perfectly suited for someone who harbors a deep-seated desire to build a robust and rewarding career in wildlife guiding and ecological conservation, offering invaluable practical experience within a stunning Big 5 wilderness area. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist lead Safari Guides with pre-drive and post-drive preparations, including thorough vehicle checks, loading essential equipment, and ensuring guest comfort items (e.g., blankets, refreshments) are ready and available.
  • Maintain safari vehicles and guiding equipment to the highest standards of cleanliness and operational readiness, reporting any faults or issues promptly to the workshop.
  • Support guides during game drives and bush walks, actively assisting with spotting wildlife, ensuring guest safety at all times, and contributing to their enjoyment and understanding of the environment.
  • Commit to continuously learning and accurately identifying local flora and fauna, tracks, bird species, and understanding their ecological roles.
  • Assist with guest hospitality, including serving refreshments during drives, helping with luggage, and interacting positively and professionally with guests from diverse backgrounds.
  • Contribute to the upkeep and cleanliness of all safari vehicles, equipment, and associated guiding facilities.
  • Actively participate in ongoing training and development programs to enhance guiding skills, deepen wildlife knowledge, and achieve relevant qualifications.
  • Adhere strictly to all reserve rules, safety protocols, environmental regulations, and ethical guiding practices.
  • Assist with light administrative tasks related to guiding operations, such as completing logbooks or guest feedback forms, as required.
  • Be available for flexible shifts, including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends, as dictated by safari schedules and guest needs.

Required Skills

  • Valid South African Driver's License (PrDP essential or willing to obtain immediately upon employment).
  • Proficiency in English, both verbal and written; additional local languages (e.g., isiZulu) are highly advantageous.
  • Strong, demonstrated passion for wildlife, conservation, and the African bush.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a friendly and approachable demeanor.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a close-knit team.
  • Physical fitness and ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions and uneven terrain.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge for vehicle pre-checks and minor troubleshooting is a distinct advantage.
  • Ability to learn quickly, take initiative, and adapt to new situations and challenges.
  • Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
  • Basic First Aid certification or willingness to obtain it within the first three months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a hospitality, tourism, or outdoor guiding environment.
  • Basic knowledge of the Mkuze/Zululand ecosystem and its biodiversity.
  • Completion of a FGASA Apprentice Field Guide (NQF2) course or similar guiding qualification.
  • Experience driving 4×4 vehicles in off-road conditions.
  • Enthusiasm for ongoing personal and professional development in the field of guiding and conservation.
