Job Description

We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join our leadership team. This is a pivotal role for an individual who thrives in an SME environment and is ready to make a significant impact on our financial strategy, operational efficiency, and overall growth trajectory. As CFO, you will be instrumental in guiding our financial health, ensuring robust financial planning, reporting, and analysis. You will oversee all financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, risk management, and compliance, while also providing crucial strategic insights to the CEO and Board. This role demands a hands-on leader with a strong commercial acumen, capable of navigating the complexities of an agricultural co-operative with diverse business segments. You will be responsible for optimising our financial performance, managing working capital, and identifying opportunities for cost reduction and revenue enhancement. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of financial regulations, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build and mentor a strong finance team. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement robust financial strategies, budgets, and forecasts that align with the company's long-term objectives.
  • Oversee all financial operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and treasury functions.
  • Prepare and present accurate and timely financial statements, reports, and analyses to the CEO, Board of Directors, and other stakeholders.
  • Manage cash flow, working capital, and capital expenditure to ensure optimal liquidity and financial stability.
  • Lead financial planning and analysis (FP&A) activities, providing insights into financial performance and strategic recommendations.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations, accounting standards (e.g., IFRS/GRAP), and tax requirements in South Africa.
  • Identify and mitigate financial risks, implementing effective internal controls and risk management frameworks.
  • Liaise with auditors, banks, and other financial institutions.
  • Provide strategic financial guidance and support to departmental heads to enhance operational efficiency and profitability.
  • Evaluate potential investment opportunities and M&A activities, performing due diligence as required.
  • Mentor, manage, and develop the finance team, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Drive continuous improvement in financial systems, processes, and reporting capabilities.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a CFO or senior finance leader in an SME, preferably within the agricultural, retail, or co-operative sector.
  • Strong knowledge of South African financial regulations and tax laws.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute financial strategies.
  • Expertise in financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and analysis.
  • Proficiency in financial reporting and compliance.
  • Advanced proficiency with financial software and ERP systems (e.g., Sage, SAP Business One).
  • Exceptional leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal abilities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • High level of integrity and ethical conduct.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Chartered Accountant (CA(SA)), CIMA, ACCA, or equivalent professional accounting qualification.
  • Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) or Finance.
  • Experience with co-operative business models and structures.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing relationships with financial institutions and auditors.
