Job Description

We are actively seeking a dedicated, physically capable, and empathetic Porter to join our essential support team at Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital. This critical role is fundamental to the seamless and efficient operation of our hospital, playing a direct part in ensuring the safe and timely movement of patients, vital medical equipment, supplies, specimens, and patient belongings throughout our facility. The ideal candidate will possess a strong work ethic, excellent communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced healthcare environment. As a Porter, you will be a crucial link in our patient care chain, directly contributing to the comfort, dignity, and overall well-being of individuals under our care. Your commitment to efficiency, patient safety, and compassionate service will be highly valued as you navigate various departments, assist clinical staff, and uphold the high standards of our institution. Key Responsibilities

  • Safely and comfortably transport patients, utilising wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds, to and from various hospital departments including wards, operating theatres, diagnostic imaging (X-ray), and physiotherapy.
  • Assist patients with diverse mobility needs, ensuring their comfort, privacy, and dignity are maintained during all transfers and movements.
  • Efficiently move medical equipment, pharmaceutical supplies, laboratory specimens, and patient belongings between different hospital units and departments as required.
  • Provide active support to nursing and medical staff with patient handling, lifting, and transfers, strictly adhering to established safety protocols.
  • Ensure all transport equipment, such as wheelchairs and stretchers, is clean, disinfected, and in proper working order, reporting any maintenance issues promptly.
  • Respond quickly and professionally to requests from medical, nursing, and administrative staff for porter services.
  • Strictly adhere to all hospital policies and procedures, including stringent infection control guidelines, patient confidentiality (POPIA), and occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Maintain a respectful, professional, and empathetic demeanor towards patients, visitors, and colleagues at all times.
  • Assist with other logistical tasks as assigned, which may include the distribution of clean linen, collection of waste, and general upkeep of transport areas.

Required Skills

  • Excellent physical stamina and the ability to lift, push, and pull heavy loads consistently throughout a shift.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patients, families, and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions accurately and meticulously, both independently and as a valued team member.
  • A compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care, with a strong understanding of patient dignity and privacy.
  • Proven reliability, punctuality, and a strong, dedicated work ethic.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills to understand schedules, instructions, and patient information.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in potentially stressful or emergency situations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 6 months to 1 year of previous experience as a Porter, preferably within a hospital or other healthcare setting.
  • Basic First Aid certification.
  • Familiarity with hospital layouts, departmental structures, and common healthcare procedures.
  • A valid Code 08 driver's license may be considered an advantage for specific duties requiring vehicle operation.
  • Fluency in more than one official South African language prevalent in the Limpopo region.
