Job Description
Stilfontein High School is seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and highly skilled School Counsellor to join our vibrant team. This critical role is designed to support the social, emotional, academic, and career development of our high school students from Grade 8 to Grade 12. The School Counsellor will work proactively and reactively to address student needs, fostering a positive school climate where every student feels supported and understood. You will be instrumental in helping students navigate the challenges of adolescence, develop coping mechanisms, make informed decisions about their future, and overcome barriers to learning. This position requires an individual with a deep understanding of adolescent psychology, excellent communication skills, and a strong commitment to student well-being. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with teachers, parents, administrators, and external agencies to ensure a comprehensive support system is in place. You will implement guidance programs, conduct individual and group counselling sessions, intervene in crisis situations, and provide vital resources to students and their families. Key Responsibilities
- Provide individual and group counselling to students regarding academic, personal, social, and career concerns.
- Develop and implement comprehensive guidance programs to support student development.
- Respond effectively to student crises, including mental health emergencies and family issues.
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to address student needs and progress.
- Conduct student assessments to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for intervention.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records in accordance with ethical and legal guidelines.
- Facilitate workshops and presentations for students on topics such as stress management, study skills, and career planning.
- Act as a liaison between the school, families, and external support services.
- Advocate for student well-being and contribute to a positive school culture.
- Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and school events.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Work, Education, or a related field
- Registration with a relevant professional body (e.g., HPCSA for Psychologists, SACSSP for Social Workers) or SACE for educators with counselling specialization
- Minimum of 3 years of post-qualification experience in counselling adolescents, preferably within an educational setting
- Demonstrated ability to provide individual and group counselling
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong crisis intervention and conflict resolution abilities
- Understanding of child and adolescent development and common psychological issues
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Educational Psychology, Counselling Psychology, or a related field
- Experience working in a high school environment in South Africa
- Familiarity with the South African education system and relevant legislation
- Proficiency in Afrikaans and/or Setswana (official languages in the region)
- Experience in developing and implementing school-wide mental health initiatives
