Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and meticulous Laboratory Technician to join our essential diagnostic team at Port Alfred Hospital. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in supporting our medical staff by performing a wide range of laboratory tests, which are critical for accurate diagnoses and effective patient treatment. You will be responsible for collecting, processing, and analyzing biological samples, including blood, urine, and tissue, adhering strictly to established protocols and quality control standards. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of routine and specialized laboratory tests on biological samples (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) according to established procedures.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment, ensuring optimal functionality and accurate results.
  • Prepare reagents, solutions, and culture media as required for various diagnostic tests.
  • Collect and process patient samples, ensuring proper labeling, storage, and handling.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all tests performed, results, and quality control data.
  • Implement and adhere to strict quality control and assurance procedures to guarantee test accuracy and reliability.
  • Identify and troubleshoot technical issues with equipment or test procedures, escalating as necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations, including biohazard waste disposal and personal protective equipment usage.
  • Communicate effectively with medical staff regarding test results, abnormal findings, and potential issues.
  • Participate in continuing education and training programs to stay updated with advancements in laboratory technology and practices.

Required Skills

  • National Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Biomedical Science, or a related field.
  • Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technologist.
  • Minimum of 2 years of practical experience in a diagnostic laboratory setting, preferably within a hospital environment.
  • Proficiency in performing a wide range of laboratory techniques including hematology, chemistry, microbiology, and serology.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory quality control and assurance principles.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in data recording and analysis.
  • Ability to operate and maintain various laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications for data entry and record keeping.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with specific laboratory information systems (LIS).
  • Specialized experience in a particular laboratory discipline (e.g., Blood Transfusion, Molecular Diagnostics).
  • Certification in specific laboratory techniques or equipment operation.
  • Ability to train and mentor junior laboratory staff.
