Key Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of routine and specialized laboratory tests on biological samples (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) according to established procedures.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment, ensuring optimal functionality and accurate results.
- Prepare reagents, solutions, and culture media as required for various diagnostic tests.
- Collect and process patient samples, ensuring proper labeling, storage, and handling.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of all tests performed, results, and quality control data.
- Implement and adhere to strict quality control and assurance procedures to guarantee test accuracy and reliability.
- Identify and troubleshoot technical issues with equipment or test procedures, escalating as necessary.
- Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations, including biohazard waste disposal and personal protective equipment usage.
- Communicate effectively with medical staff regarding test results, abnormal findings, and potential issues.
- Participate in continuing education and training programs to stay updated with advancements in laboratory technology and practices.
Required Skills
- National Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Biomedical Science, or a related field.
- Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technologist.
- Minimum of 2 years of practical experience in a diagnostic laboratory setting, preferably within a hospital environment.
- Proficiency in performing a wide range of laboratory techniques including hematology, chemistry, microbiology, and serology.
- Strong understanding of laboratory quality control and assurance principles.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in data recording and analysis.
- Ability to operate and maintain various laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications for data entry and record keeping.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with specific laboratory information systems (LIS).
- Specialized experience in a particular laboratory discipline (e.g., Blood Transfusion, Molecular Diagnostics).
