Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Ventilation Officer to join our dynamic team in Welkom, Free State. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring optimal underground environmental conditions, guaranteeing the health and safety of our workforce, and maintaining compliance with all relevant mining regulations and company standards. This position is central to our operational integrity, requiring a keen eye for detail, strong technical expertise, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. You will be responsible for the design, implementation, and monitoring of ventilation systems, ensuring adequate air flow, temperature control, and gas management within the mine. Your contributions will directly impact our ability to operate efficiently and safely, making this a pivotal role within our mining operations. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about workplace safety, possesses excellent analytical skills, and is capable of working effectively both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain effective mine ventilation systems to ensure optimal air quality, temperature, and humidity levels underground.
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits of ventilation infrastructure, including fans, stoppings, and air-flow regulators, to ensure compliance with design specifications and regulatory standards.
  • Monitor and manage hazardous gases (e.g., methane, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides) and dust levels, implementing corrective actions as necessary.
  • Prepare and present detailed ventilation reports, including survey data, system performance, and recommendations for improvement, to management and relevant authorities.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all occupational health and safety regulations, company policies, and mining legislation related to mine ventilation.
  • Collaborate with mine planning, production, and engineering departments to integrate ventilation requirements into operational plans and project designs.
  • Manage and supervise ventilation teams, including training, performance management, and fostering a culture of safety and accountability.
  • Oversee the procurement, installation, and maintenance of ventilation equipment and instrumentation.
  • Respond promptly to ventilation emergencies and incidents, conducting investigations and implementing preventative measures.

Required Skills

  • Mine Environmental Control Certificate (MEC Certificate) or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ practical experience in mine ventilation within an underground mining environment.
  • Proven knowledge of relevant mining legislation (e.g., MHSA) and industry best practices.
  • Proficiency in ventilation software (e.g., Ventsim, FANSIM, VentGIS) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex data.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • National Diploma or Degree in Mining Engineering or Environmental Engineering.
  • Experience in large-scale gold mining operations.
  • First Aid Certificate and Gas Testing Certificate.
  • Valid blasting certificate or equivalent for underground operations.
