Job Description

Are you passionate about animal welfare, public safety, and community service? Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) is seeking a dedicated and resilient Animal Control Officer to join our team in the Buckeye, Arizona area. This is a dynamic and critical role that requires a unique blend of compassion, courage, and keen observation skills. As an Animal Control Officer, you will be on the front lines, responding to a diverse range of calls that impact both animal and human lives. Your primary responsibility will be to enforce county and state animal control ordinances, investigate cases of animal cruelty and neglect, and ensure the humane treatment and safe handling of animals within our jurisdiction.

This challenging yet rewarding position involves direct interaction with the public, often in high-stress situations. You will educate residents on responsible pet ownership, mediate neighborhood disputes involving animals, and provide assistance to injured or distressed wildlife. The work is largely field-based, requiring independent judgment, quick decision-making, and the ability to operate specialized equipment in various environmental conditions. You will be a crucial link between lost pets and their families, and a protector for animals in need. Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to calls regarding stray, injured, aggressive, or deceased animals in the field.
  • Enforce county and state animal control ordinances, including leash laws, licensing, and dangerous animal regulations.
  • Investigate complaints of animal cruelty, neglect, and abandonment; gather evidence and prepare reports for potential prosecution.
  • Capture and impound animals using humane methods and specialized equipment (e.g., catch poles, traps).
  • Transport animals to MCACC shelters, veterinary clinics, or other designated facilities.
  • Educate the public on responsible pet ownership, animal welfare laws, and available community resources.
  • Assist in emergency situations involving animals, such as natural disasters or accidents.
  • Maintain accurate records, complete detailed reports, and issue citations as necessary.
  • Testify in court or administrative hearings regarding animal control cases.
  • Perform humane euthanasia when required, following established protocols and training.
  • Conduct patrols to identify and address animal-related issues proactively.
  • Operate and maintain a county vehicle and assigned equipment safely and efficiently.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 18 months of experience in animal handling, law enforcement, or public safety.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of animal behavior, handling techniques, and welfare principles.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with the public and preparing reports.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in challenging and potentially dangerous situations.
  • Physical stamina and ability to lift heavy animals (up to 75 lbs) and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications for record-keeping and report generation.
  • Valid Arizona Driver's License and a clean driving record.
  • Ability to maintain composure and de-escalate conflicts with the public.
  • Successful completion of a background check and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Animal Control Officer (ACO) or equivalent certification.
  • Experience with wildlife handling and rescue.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) communication skills.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Criminal Justice, or a related field.
  • Previous experience working for a municipal or county animal control agency.
