Job Description
We are seeking an innovative and passionate Instructional Designer to join our dynamic team at Sacramento City College. This role is crucial in enhancing the learning experience for our students by collaborating with faculty to design and develop engaging, effective, and accessible course materials across various modalities, including online, hybrid, and face-to-face instruction. The Instructional Designer will leverage pedagogical best practices, learning technologies, and multimedia resources to create rich educational content that aligns with course objectives and institutional standards. You will be instrumental in fostering a culture of continuous improvement in teaching and learning, providing expert guidance, and supporting faculty in the integration of innovative instructional strategies. This position requires a creative problem-solver with strong communication skills, a keen eye for detail, and a commitment to promoting student success through thoughtful and inclusive course design. The ideal candidate will be adept at navigating complex learning management systems and will stay abreast of emerging trends and technologies in instructional design and educational technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with faculty to design, develop, and revise engaging and effective course materials, syllabi, and assessments.
- Apply instructional design models and learning theories to create innovative learning experiences for diverse student populations.
- Provide expert consultation and support to faculty on best practices in teaching, learning, and assessment, particularly in online and hybrid environments.
- Develop and deliver training sessions and workshops for faculty on instructional technologies and pedagogical strategies.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of instructional materials and programs, recommending and implementing improvements.
- Ensure all course content and materials meet accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG 2.1) and comply with institutional policies.
- Research and recommend new educational technologies and tools to enhance learning outcomes.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines and maintaining high-quality standards.
- Stay current with trends and advancements in instructional design, educational technology, and higher education pedagogy.
Required Skills
- Master's degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Curriculum and Instruction, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in instructional design, preferably within a higher education setting.
- Proficiency with Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Canvas, Blackboard, or Moodle.
- Demonstrated expertise in applying instructional design theories (e.g., ADDIE, backwards design).
- Strong understanding of adult learning principles and diverse learning styles.
- Experience with multimedia development tools for creating instructional content (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, Camtasia).
- Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administrators.
- Knowledge of web accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1) and strategies for creating accessible digital content.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with graphic design principles for instructional materials.
- Certification in Quality Matters (QM) or other online course quality assurance programs.
- Familiarity with OER (Open Educational Resources) and their integration into course design.
- Experience in project management within an educational context.
- Bilingual proficiency (e.g., Spanish, Vietnamese, Tagalog) relevant to the local community.
