Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Fleet Maintenance Mechanic to join our dynamic team within the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, based in the iconic Golden Gate Park. This is a critical role that ensures the operational readiness and safety of our diverse fleet of vehicles and heavy equipment, which are essential for maintaining the beauty and functionality of San Francisco’s treasured green spaces. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a wide range of skilled mechanical work, including inspection, diagnosis, repair, and preventative maintenance on gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel vehicles, as well as various types of park maintenance equipment. From turf equipment and utility vehicles to trucks and specialized machinery, your expertise will directly contribute to the department’s ability to serve the public and preserve our natural resources. This role requires a keen eye for detail, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and efficiency. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and preventative maintenance of gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel powered vehicles and equipment.
  • Conduct comprehensive diagnostics using specialized tools and computer-based systems to identify and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues.
  • Execute repairs and replacements of engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, brake systems, electrical systems, steering, and suspension components.
  • Perform routine scheduled maintenance including oil changes, lubrication, tire rotations, and safety inspections.
  • Document all maintenance and repair work accurately, including parts used, time spent, and issues identified.
  • Ensure all work complies with safety regulations, departmental standards, and environmental policies.
  • Operate a variety of shop equipment, hand tools, and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Respond to emergency repair calls and assist with roadside repairs as needed.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of verifiable experience as a Fleet Mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel engines.
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic outputs.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License; Class B or A (CDL) highly preferred.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong commitment to safety protocols and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ASE certifications in relevant areas (e.g., Medium/Heavy Truck, School Bus, Auto).
  • Experience with specialized park maintenance equipment (e.g., mowers, tractors, sweepers).
  • Knowledge of California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations.
  • Experience using fleet management software for tracking maintenance and repairs.
  • Associate's degree or vocational certification in Automotive Technology or a related field.
